Today I bought a Sandisk card reader (Image Mate 12-in-1)just hoping to have my SD cards read FASTER than the built-in card reader of my HP printer's card reader. I placed my Sandisk Extreme III SD card in the slot of the new Sandisk card reader. It asked the SD card needs to be formatted. I tried formatting it and it said that the Windows could not format the SD card.It also erased the existing data. I inserted another SD card (Kingston) and the card reader again asked the card to be formatted. My SD cards work in my printer's card reader without the need to be formatted.

Why does the Sandisk card reader need the cards to be formatted and than it says "Windows cannot format the card" ?
BTW my camera is Panasonic LX2.

That is odd. Your camera cannot store photos on the card unless it is formatted, so it definitely is formatted.

What software are you using in conjunction with your card reader to download your photos? The Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard?

I bought one of those Sandisk readers that are capable of reading SDHC cards ( I only bought it because it was the first one I had seen).........it is the only piece of hardware I have not been able to get working on my computer in quite a few years........My niece now owns that reader........I hate Sandisk.

Just trying to learn and it's slow going!

It is a ploy to get you to buy Sandisk SD cards...

Really though I don't ask questions I'd just return it and get a different one... card readers either work or they don't..

Thank you all for taking the time to send your feedback.

Today I went to the shop that I bought the Sandisk card reader.

Here the seller checked it whether it worked with a mobile phone SD card and it worked but it refused to recognize the digital cameras' SD cards.

I returned it and bought another one of the same model (Sandisk Image Mate 12-in-1) and it worked.
It is also faster than my printer's built-in card reader.

BTW, the faulty Sandisk card reader that I had bought yesterday, was unopened in a sealed box. IMO, this may mean that at least some Sandisk products may be sold without the necessary quality control.

Thanks and best wishes,
Ali

On the flip side though if QC gets too high then so does the price -.-.....
