I have read so many threads in this forum about this new firmware but none focused on findings of the likely improvements. I'll list them below what other users have reported:

1) Battery charging fixed - official statement
2) Focus faster
3) Puts it in ready mode quicker when first switched on
4) One thread claims G2's flash is now more powerful (?)

5) One thread claims it has increased the optical zoom to 5X without any hardware upgrade (???)

Anything else in
1) color handling
2) sharpness
3) focus in dark settings
4) flash light accuracy
5) Macro
6) handling of WB
7) Anything that you found but not listed

1) Battery charging fixed - official statement
That will be nice...
2) Focus faster
Super...
3) Puts it in ready mode quicker when first switched on
Um.. .ok, but I think G2 is pretty fast as it is.
4) One thread claims G2's flash is now more powerful (?)
Uh? Questionable...
5) One thread claims it has increased the optical zoom to 5X
without any hardware upgrade (???)
That's certainly a joke. :)

I'd say most of the non-official statements are probably a bit of wishful thinking on all of our parts - wouldn't Canon be quick to trumpet the fact that the camera is now even faster (and possibly get Phil to do a retest on his Files Sizes and Timings page)? I for one have not noticed any speed increase or operational differences, though I've only taken a few quick in-office pictures after the update :)
4) One thread claims G2's flash is now more powerful (?)
If true, this could mean it's just optimized the flash brightness, though I'd have to say my G2 is more prone to over rather than underexposure...

Yay, this explains why Canon put on a 5x zoom lens but only restricted it to 108mm :

Without a doubt, the focusing is faster than it originally was...

maybe you are just snapping pictures... but when I half depress the shutter to get a focus and exposure lock the focus box turns green and the camera is ready to shoot much faster than it would have before the update.
I really am surprised everyone isn't noticing this right away

The focus is not only faster but I somehow noticed its more accurate, especially in dark environment. In the old firmware, not only the focus was slow, it sometimes give false signal that the object was in focus (turn green) but in fact it was not. May be its only me, I somehow notice its less prone to minute handshakes as well. I had a lot of problem with handshare in slow shutter but it seems to have improved somewhat. Have you noticed anything else?

I did notice it right away.

The firmware update program has been made XP compatible.

OK, So the focus is faster but more importantly is it sharper, ie does it focus better than before.

I agree. Its one of the things I noticed immediately after the upgrade. Half pressing you get the focus beep a lot quicker.

It is very common for manufacturers to not disclose everything that's included in an upgrade. As someone else mentioned if they listed everything they are somewhat admitting that they initially released a camera with a bunch of bugs.

Also check if the Auto WB has improved. I bought my G2 with firmware 1.0.1.0 and the Auto WB is very accurate in most situations.

No doubt, 100% undeniable. The autofocus is definitely faster. I was somewhat skeptical so I autofocused and messed around with the camera a little to get a baseline and then did the firmware updat. Wow that's fast! Wasn't the slow autofocus one of the G2 critics biggest complaints? No more. This is a very big benefit and will allow you to grab many more usable "action" shots.

OK I admit I didn't get the 5x optical zoom, maybe with the next firmware, but this fast autofocus is NICE!

Well, I can't compare, since I never had the old one, but the current firmware still doesn't focus in low light as well as I had hoped. My ancient Rebel SII SLR still does quite a bit better at times.

Has anyone checked manual focusing yet?

The zoomed picture seems a lot clearer than in the past. The last time I tried using manual focus was some weeks ago, but I remember being less than impressed with the image. If anyone has not yet upgraded, check the quality of the zoomed up image in manual focus mode before and after the firmware upgrade.

Cheers,

Just checked manual focusing. Maybe because I dont believe all these claims about this amazing firmware upgrade.

But then again you might be right.

The manual focus zoom window looks much clearer and easier to tell if the subject is sharp or blurry.

I agree, I had a hard time in the past with the manual focus for this reason. It looks much better to me know...

If canon meant to make these extra changes, why wouldnt they mention it?
