I am having difficulty getting the camera to be recognised by my USB connector under Windows XP.

Zoombrowser etc seems to work fine. but the computer doesn't respond when USB cable is inserted. Yes the power knob is set correctly and it all works on my ME machine.
Any ideas?

Chris,

I'm guessing you loaded the software from the CD that came with your G1. If so, you don't have the WIA driver that Windows XP needs to work with your camera. See the Canon Driver page at http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/driverdown.html and download and install the 3.9.1 WIA driver for your G1. (Be sure to uninstall the driver you currently have loaded first.)

Good luck. :)

Chris.......

Keep on trying, I connected my G1 to a new laptop with XP and had no

problem connecting and getting Zoombrowser to work. I installed the Canon utilities first. This puts all required software onboard. Good luck

This is a new instalation so no previous driver. I did try to load the WIA driver (what does WIA mean?) and I think it said now plug in the camera and the installation will be completed, but it wasn't. The help file and the uninstall are there, but not, it seems the program.

Are you saying you didn't need the WIA driver? Or was it there already?
Chris

Chris, a couple of questions:

1) Was this an upgrade or fresh install of XP? If it was an upgrade, you need to uninstall the old twain drivers first. Then, install the WIA drivers.

2) Which WIA drivers did you use? For the G1 you need 3.9.1, not 3.9.0! Go to http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/driverdown.html and double check which one you used.

I installed the WIA drivers on a full install of XP and it recognized my G1 without difficulty.

WIA = Window Image Aquisition.

Assuming you have installed the correct WIA drivers, 3.91 available from http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/customer/driverdown.html , then you should be good. The camera gets recognized correctly and there is no need to even use ZoomBrowser.

On my system, I have noticed that sometimes it is necessary to turn the camera onto PC Connection and off a couple of times before the Digital Camera/Scanner wizard comes on.

Thanks to all those who responded. It was a new installation, I had got the right revision driver.
It is good to know that it definately should work.

I contacted Canon help and it became clear it was either a camera (?cable) problem or a USB problem. The cable must be OK as it works on the other computer (though sometimes a bit erratically as mentioned in one of the replies). The USB had worked earlier with a printer. It now looks like a USB problem as the printer no longer works although Windows reports all ports OK.

So I am pursuing the USB with other devices and am confident when that is sorted out the camera will work on it too.
Thanks,
Chris Beney
