Sorry to post this again if youve already seen it, but it seemed a good day to do it.....I have been looking into the story, and its really amazing...apparently,news of the tragedy was supressed by the UK/US governments partly because it would effect morale at this point in the war....most of these guys would have been just "kids" I guess

Thanks for looking

This is very local to me, the ships were sunk by a suprise U-boat attack whilst preparing for the D-Day assaults, this area was used as practice as the beaches are very similar to those in Normandy across the channell .

Anyway the ship lay on the bottom with its cargo of amo and tanks, untill 1984, when this tank was raised and stands as a memorial...its a really beautiful piece of English coastline, with lots of wildlife and very unspoilt, today I passed, and many americans (old men) were there, many with medals on their suits, I spoke to one really really old guy who actually sailed from Salcombe for the assaults on the beaches....very moving, they had come over for a rememberance service, he was 87 years old, he was 25 at the time of the invasion.....RESPECT IS DUE !!
