Your best shot

fun thread - lots of great shot.

Definitely one of my favorites there Daniella. I think that all
too often wildlife shooters just grab the longest lens they can
find for the super close-up and miss the more moving bigger picture
as you have wonderfully captured here.
this is a rare occasion that will not happen often. In order to get the big picture like that with an animal the size of a bear at 18mm, you must be really close to the animal, which makes it nearly impossible to capture for most people. what I did was very risky, not something I would recommand to anyone. if it is a deer, then you have similar problem because the deer will be most likely afraid of you and not cooperate. it's nice to be able to take a shot of an animal well positioned in a beautiful landscape but it is really hard to do at 18mm and get the 18mm perspective with wild animals. I wish I could do this more often but it is probably one in a lifetime shot for me.
nice and good lighting. it'S hard to pic one but this one maybe
could do it. It is rare that a photo that has a lot of personal
emotional involvement turn out good, at least for me. Usualy my
favorite photos that have a more emotional impact on me are not the
best, but I think this one combine both.

no, that was not the scenario :) it's in the middle of nowhere..no cars miles around and when you're out there..you're in bear country. better be aware that some bears are skittish and some are very inquisitive.

At some point I was in the dense fog..and was taking pic of that (another time) and I heard a branch crack..turned my head and saw a bear about 20 feet of me..I had never seen a bear run away so fast..he was in sheer terror. I did not even had the time to aim and get a shot as he was out in the fog.

if you want to get close to bears, it is easy to do in Sequoia NP. at some point my boyfriend was taking a pic of a big tree on tripod and the bear was right beside him foraging in a dish. about 15 feet of him. that same bear later went to about 10 feet to 8 feet of me..I did the shot handheld.

This is just a fantastic shot (one of your many BTW).

I've only gotten to Sequoia once in my life, and it was just awesome - no bears but a great early season blizzard. I can't wait to get back.

Congratulations on an award winning photo.

But here is one I had printed at 24x36.
wow, was it not pixelated at such large size? did you use some
sort of resizing software like genuine fractal or the like?
Nope, I just took the original file into print. It looks fabulous! This is full frame, Daniella. I found this Juvenile Redtail one day in the summer. I couldn't believe how close he let me get. I got tons of flight shots, poses, he was a great find.

There is a very fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'.

yes a great find. it's good to know that 8mp is enough to produce a good quality print of such large size. was the print expensive?

Great capture - is that a series of stacked shots or a single frame? If it was multiple, how did you do the stacking?

I only ask because I'm going to be in a great place for Thanksgiving week and I'm hoping for a similar opportunity (moonset, very little light polution).
