I'm in the process of researching for my first digital camera. I consider myself an accomplished SLR photographer, and I've been extremely impressed by the reviews and comments on the new G2. However, I have read some concerns about its ability to adequately capture action shots. I've got two children very active in athletics, and I want a camera that will allow me to capture their athletic activities. Some are at night, some are at day - all outdoors. Any feedback or advice? Thanks.

all consumer digital cameras will focus much slower than film SLRs. comaprable performance can be had in digital SLRs that cost $3K+. You will have to learn new techniques for action, to prefocus on the spot where the action is going to be in a moment;

the other limitation is that the consumer grade digicams have much grainer image performance at higher ISOs, you can only get faster 'film" by getting a professional grade camera.

Given those limitations, there are also many advantages to digital including the ability to take hundreds of shots, delete most of them on quick review and shoot many more. Use the search feature at the top of the forum search for "g2 action" "G2 sports" "pro90 sports" etc. you will find many similar threads with posted examples.

I have the same concerns as you. See ISO questions.

If anyone has any great action or sports pictures, using the G2 I would sure love to see them. I know its sure not in my budget to buy a $3000 pro camera, so I am hoping that there is a way around your problem.

I've been shooting lots of climbers/skiers/snowboarders and it definitely requires more setup than with an SLR. Here are some of my related comments:
  • Take a zillion shots. The film is free! But get a BIG card, I have 2x 256Mb and shooting in RAW format all the time, I run out pretty fast. Think toward the future, your next camera will need even more storage space.
  • The biggest problem with people shots for the G2 is its minimal telephoto (I don't have a teleconverter yet).
  • don't use the "auto" mode. Use P, or even better, Tv so you can set an acceptible shutter speed using the 4-way button.
  • You can push the manual-focus button, which allows you to fix the focus until the next shot is taken. You can also pre-focus by holding the shutter down, but sometimes in waiting for a shot you press and release the shutter several times. With the manual-focus lock, you'll be ready.
  • The semi-press/full-press feel of the G2 is pretty nice. I've been using mine with gloves/mittens/frozen fingers.
  • Using the flash is SLOW (even the 420EX I got on Friday and shot 200 photos with on Saturday). Any flash shot will require anticipation.
  • to address the noise issue, you might check out the Photoshop actions from Fred Miranda.
  • If you reduce the resolution (still would be plenty for 4x6 prints) you can shoot pretty fast as the G2 has a buffer for shots taken that are pending to be written to the CF card.
As far as action, here's a shot from yesterday -- 1/800th, f5, ISO 100.

Take care,
Paul

I saw lots of good advice. Hear is a sample of what can be done with a G1:
