Thanks,, end of year isn't so bad. I'm less concerned about unversal binary (as I'm on a G5) but I'd like to see it crash less frequently.

Thanks, that is great to hear. Perhaps I will wait to purchase until then.

Really?

I'm a recent switcher to Nikon. Have been a Canon user for a long time, and have been using DPP (Canon's NX) to "develop" RAW and PS'ing the files. I decided to try all the RAW converters I could get trials for that worked with NEF.

I converted the same NEF in each program. Bibble, ACR/Lightroom, NX, PS CS (obviously ACR), Capture One Pro.

Without knowing the answer to my own question, I looked at each of the files. The only two converters I felt did an excellent job were NX and Capture One.

So there you have it. Why would anyone use NX? Because the quality of NEF conversion is superior to many other options, that's why.

I've been using the trial version of NX for a bit and there is another reason to conisder beyond quality of conversion. It's selectivity tools are excellent and intuitive. If you've not taken advantage of the free 30 day demo you should just to see if it works for you.

I asked the Nikon Rep at J and R today about the timeline for a UB and he also said by the first of the year.

Can't wait!

Interesting: I received a message from Nikon this morning (I had asked about the Universal Binary): there are no plans to introduce a Universal Binary (according to the Nikon Rep).

That's their official line, I guess.

I'd copy and paste the rep's email, but it essentially says I will be struck down by a bolt of lightning if I do so on an internet message board.

6 weeks ago, best guess was that a new NX release would hit the streets by end of year (2006 that is) ... that's 5 days away. Any "newer news" on this subject?
