The Sigma flashes.....

Here are some snippets from a live chat with a B&H rep.

I want to know if this is true. D : is me and G : is the rep........

"D : The Sigma flashes need modification to work with the K100D??

G : as long as its a Pentax AF lens its compatable

D : I read that the flashes needed to be sent back to Sigma for Modifications is this true??

G : which flashes ?

D : The EF-500 DG ST P-TTL

G : it is compatable to pentax digital dslr

D : without mods?? I live outside the US, so shipping back to Sigma is out of the question

G: correct

G : it is already compatable to pentax digital dslr "

So is this the truth?? cuz I would order one tomorrow if it is!!

If I were you I'd contact Sigma and ask. I just went thru the same thing and went with the Pentax flash instead of the Sigma based on Sigma's response. I don't entirely understand why there is such a difference in opinion between Sigma resellers and Sigma themselves. Sigma responded to me that the 500 series flashes were not compatible out of the box but they would do a free mod if I sent it in. Maybe they've fully updated new released stock so thats why it's important to contact Sigma directly to find out.

My understanding is that the new inventories of EF500's are completely compatible with the K100D. If you buy from a reseller who sells these frequently (ie. has a newer inventory) you should be okay. I think I've read here recently that some folks bought a EF500 from B&H and put it on their K100Ds with no problems.

The older units however are not. Those with older units need to contact their local Sigma office to discuss how to get their units rechipped. The US division of Sigma has decided to rechip these units for free. Other areas may charge a nominal fee to rechip the flash.

I have a EF-500 DG ST bought only about a month ago and it works fine with my DS and K100D. Perhaps there was some problem in the past but as far as I can tell there isn't now.

Sigma4less clearly mentions they are all P-TTL enabled.
At $134.95 looks like a good deal.

P-TTL does not ensure compatibility. They should work fine with *istD* cameras, but some of the older models cannot work with K100D.

And even after the chip upgrade from Sigma, it remains uncertain if it would work with K10D.

Sorry for taking soo long to reply.

I wrote to Sigma regarding the statement made by the B&H rep, and Sigma stated that the problem has been rectified for the newer batches of the flash, but states that stores may still have the older flashes that have the problem so it depends on the reseller's turn over what we may get, and we know that they are all scame artist anyway! ;-)

Sounds like a typical live chat. I find live chat useless.

People have been sending Sigma flashes in to have the chips replaced to work with current bodies. But we have seen no reports of problems among people who haven't had this done.
