Why two-sided printing?

I have been looking for a replacement for my old Canon S750. I noticed that many of the new printers are now offering double sided printing. I can understand if someone wants to print a photo book, but what are the advantages of double printing for the average home printer? Am I missing something?

I did a forum search, and found that most posts were talking about printing booklets, photo book home printing, trying to find the right papers to use, etc.

Thanks.

Duplex printing is when the printer prints on both sides, otherwise you have to take the paper and flip it over to print on the other side - any printer ever made can do that.

Many people print on both sides for portfolio stuff and cards

I've been making my own greeting cards for years. I usually print the photos in high quality photo setting, then reset the printer for text (the old Canon does text best at reg default settings) turn the paper over and print. Anyhow, I would think this duplex printing would actually complicate my printing workflow...or at least not be of great benefit for me.
Just wanting to see if others were liking the option.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.

the only printers I know of that do true duplex are high-end office printers and they usually collate and staple too.

Almost all HP do duplex printing, it's standard on many many home and business inkjets and optional an almost all their printers with an optional attachment.

I've always used it for regular printing, saves half the paper.

I have a Brother laser printer and an HP 990C inkjet that both have built in duplex printing. The duplex feature is great for saving paper when printing manuals and other documents. It also means less to carry around, or conversely, more can fit into a binder.

For photo printing, I use an Epson R2400. The only time I do duplex printing with it is when making calendars. As it has no support for duplex printing, I print all images, one per page on double sided ink jet paper, and then reinsert the paper and print all calendar pages on the other side. It takes some care to make sure that everything turns out right. I take the resulting calendars to Staples for binding.

This is the first year that I've owned a "duplex" printer. A Canon ip5000.
It's fantastic for printing calendars!

Methink, how about wanting to print a user's manual?

So far the option would have been to prints the odds or even pages first and then viceversa, making sure that you inserted the paper back in the coorect way.
This way, you can hit the print button and go back when it's finished!

Thanks to all who took the time to reply. Guess it does have some advantages...and would be nice not to have to do the odd and even pages routine for manuals and such.

Yes I just saw nice book printing by Crane and Innova at PPE where you need to print double sided. I used to also print double sided matte media for hinged custom book making where I bound the sheets with hinge tape, and added a cover.

The HP printers have better registration than ever before, with this type of printing in mind. I haven't tried on other than HP and I don't knoz the accuracy of other printers. The older Epsons do not register though, so it'd be nice to knoz from other users where everyone is at today.

I have Konica-Minolta 2430DL colour laser with optional duplex feature.

As well as the normal paper saving double sided mode, the Windows driver (though not the linux driver) provides a booklet feature which rotates and shrinks the pages and figures out what order to print them so that (for example) a 12 A-4 page document ends up as an A5 booklet on three sheets of folded A4.

This is a really neat feature...

What I would like is a duplex capable A3 printer so that, with folding, I can produce A4 sized booklets..

Oh yes and it should also have the photo capabilities of the B9180 and be able to print on CD/DVD...
