What a surprise! FZ50

If anyone has any other suggestions for how to make the image
quality better and more consistent, I'm open to it. I have 30 days
to test it.
You can do 2 things.

1) Play with camera settings. Set the noise reduction and sharpness
to LOW.
Tried that, they are better but require more pp.
2) Do what the reviewer here suggest. Rezise all your shots to 6
megapixels before touching them. This downsizing will eliminate
most of the problems, leaving you with much better shots
(pixel-to-pixel wise).
I will try that as well. But doesn't that eliminate the benefit of being able to crop better from 10 megapixels?
As for the blue color cast, always set the white balance manually,
based on actual conditions. When not in AUTO mode (i.e. camera set
to sunny, cloudy, fluorescent tube etc.), FZ50 will give you the
option to manually shift the white balance towards RED. Just press
the up arrow key few times (applies to FZ30) and push the slider to
the left.
I used the fine WB adjustment which seems to have helped.

Thanks.

I think you will grow to love your FZ50. The venus lll engine is
not all bad. My TZ1 has the same engine and in everyday photography
the problems everyone is talking about, like color smearing aren't
as evident. I know this. My TZ1 is the fastest digital camera I've
used. It has quick startup, quick focus, quick focus in difficult
lighting.
There is no doube about the excellent ergonomics of the camera. I read the manual and discovered the fine WB, and direct exposure adjustment which I really like.
So give hubby a big hug and thank him for his thoughtfulness. At
least your generous spirit doesn't go unnoticed or taken for
granted.
Yes, I was surprised and grateful for his very thoughtful gift. That's the main reason I want to make this camera really work for me.

Thanks.

I had NR low, all the rest STD. Today, I set all low except saturation which seemed fine.

I think the pix from today later in this thread are getting better.

Thanks.

those are great pics... but the rabbit scares me... :)
It was supposed to be a white rabbit.
My question: where can I find woman who prefer FZ50 over jewelry? :)
(just kidding)
I'll make you guys even more jealous, I love watching football and baseball with my husband on TV, too. My husband thinks -he's- the lucky one.

... but I do love jewelry as well. ;-)
The shot with the house, are those real pumpkins? That's a lot of
pumpkins... :)
Yes, real pumpkins. I liked that design.

Thanks.

Could be just preferences. I think yours are a little over-exposed? But I'm getting there. ;-)

with it! Your interior shots are great - the light is great.
I have to agree, most of the interior shots are better than I would have expected from a P&S camera.
(Lovely house you have there.)
Not mine, but lovely none the less.
Hope it works out for you.
Me, too.

Thanks.

Hi Kate,

I've been runnin' with all settings to standard and NR to low with
good success with my FZ50. Good luck and have fun with your new
cam!
Those are the exact settings I used yesterday.

But today was better. I'll continue to work with it until I decide if it's for me.

Thanks.

I too use all STD except NR at low.

The latest pics seem to have much better saturation and exposure
and really look good!
I did some bracketing today and I think that helped. I need to get to know this cam's little intricacies.
Personally, I think the FZ50 is much better outdoors at ISO 100, so
that is where I do most of my shooting.
I wanted to try the camera without too many adjustments first. But I probably would also keep it at ISO 100 outdoors.

Thanks.

I think you are very right. I have the same experience. Good exposure matters quite a bit with this camera and setting everything to low except saturation is the setting that gives you the least artifacts and water coulur effect. With sharpening at standard there are very visible artifacts if exposure is a bit low with this camera when zooming close. The LCD is very bright and can fool you - at least my monitor is consideraly darker than the camera lcd so I find I underexpose if I trust the camera lcd. I have tried to set the lcd lower but it is still deceivingly bright.

For close-ups at wide angle the camera performs great and the iso improvement gives you the opportunity to at least come home with shots that's worth keeping in low light even though it cannot be compared to the high iso performance of a dslr. But at full zoom and slight underexposure it seems you need to have sharpening, contrast and NR at low to get a good image without a lot of grainy artifacts.

Thanks, ngari. I played around with it at lunchtime today and found that the foliage comes out much better if you use the wider apertures. Not great, but definitely better. Clear definition of leaves rather than just blobs of color. Bracketing helps as well.

From what everyone says, there's a bit of a learning curve. You know what I think, the FZ50 has much different characteristics from previous FZ's so you have to unlearn some of the stuff that worked before and come up with some new tricks for this camera.
You will master this camera. I am quite sure of it.

Well if someone gives me a camera I tend not to be so fussy. I guess that is out of courtesy too. On the other hand I have been known to hit ebay a few times!

The 50 is an ok cam, but not one I would buy myself

I think you are absolutely right. My first reaction was to use it as I did the FZ20 with the settings that worked on that camera. But the more I play with it, I can see this is a different animal alltogether. I think it's the tuning they've done to make it work better indoors (as was requested many times in this forum).

I'm working on it. ;-)

Hi John,

I have only taken a couple of raw pics... so I really can't suggest any reliable settings for shooting raw.
Hi Kirwin,

Understand that your settings are all standard, except NR which you
set at LOW.
Does this aplly to both JPEG and RAW pictures ??
Thanks
John

Unless I am mistaken, I believe that shooting RAW ignores these settings. You are expected to control contrast, sharpening, etc in post-processing then save the image as a JPG or TIF.
