Last Fall I went to Florence on a photo trip. I met up with two members of the dpr forum, and we spent some time in Florence, as well as traveling to pictoresque villages of Cinque Terre.

It was a great trip, being able to focus on photography and observing and discussing photography with the others. We had a wonderful time, as Italy is full of photo opportunities, as well as its fantastic food and wine. It was also a good experience to meet someone I'd just met on the internet. I was worried it might feel akward and nerdy, but we all got along really well!

I've been really slow at processing these images, and I'm just now working my way through them. I got a lot of great color shots, but here are a couple of B&W's, or rather, tritoned. Shot in rainy Florence. Mostly people shots.

This is a fantastic series. Great use of B&W. The photos of people are free from the usual "gawker" gaze. Great job!

I was in Porto Venere (last village of Cinque Terre) just Friday, as I live nearby. Plenty of photo opportunity there.

Your pictures are very nice, the cup in particular is very nicely showing Italy to its best (I think I drink 5 or 6 of these a day).

Great shots, I love the composition of all the photos. The tritone conversion really brings out the best in the pictures. Would you mind telling us how you achieved this effect?

Really fantastic shots! Thanks for posting. I was just thinking how I was getting tired of getting bogged down by all the sophomoric discussion about which camera is the best... I just wanted to see some great photos (I sure haven't taken any great ones recently) and then I saw your post. Wonderful shots!

I think these are all very well executed. They seem to have all the proper mood and just the right amount of processing. Good job on the B&W conversion as well.

thanks for posting...I find that there are fewer and fewer people posting these calibur of photos here recently...probably due to all the discussion over the new D80, and speculation over the D40.

Thomas,

I love your work. Fantastic subjects and compositions. I especially liked your B/W conversion. How did you do it?

Lou, Thanks for your compliments! Glad you enjoyed the shots. I certainly enjoyed taking them (although it took some time before I pulled myself together and processed them)

For the conversions, I use Lab B&W, and then add tritone, as described here:

I did enjoy that one! Thanks for pointing me to it!

Thanks, aparat! I really try to avoid that "gawker" gaze - a lot of shot are never taken because of it, and some I take, but throw away because of it :-)

woooooooooooooooooo, beautifull! Amazing shoots, no doubt!!!
Did u try lisbon? ;)
hehe... I heard it's a nice place ;-) I just realized, I missed your post in that thread, sorry about that. Nice tonal range in that image you posted. I like the image, but would've loved a person or something in the foreground to anchor the image and provide a focus point, although the scene/surroundings are wonderful.

Thanks for commenting here too.

I love #1, 3, and 4. The last one has superb composition, but there's something about the out-of-focus buildings that bothers me (I think it's the double lines). Nicely done!
