Well, OK, not exactly M8 but how about my 'new' used Digilux 2. This camera has really grown on me the past few days since getting it. Reminds me of shooting my Contax rangefinder in a way. That f2.0 lens is SHARP. -Norm

Thanks Greg! Appreciate the feedback. -Norm

Hi,

How is the batterly life of the Digilux-2, compared to todays models? I'm also considering getting a second hand Digilux-2, but I'm afraid of having to charge the batteries after each 50 shots or so...

And is there any noticable shutter lag, as with more older models?

If not, I might get one. Please keep posting your sample pics, because I really liked the three your posted. Really really sharp! Any PP done or straight from the camera?

Regards,
Mischa

Thanks for the tip! Battery and overall performance seem excellent.

However, does anyone know what the highest SD-card memory capacity of this camera is? In the review they used a 512Mb card; wondering whether even higher capacity cards are possible...

Mischa

I forgot to ask: how is the camera for portraits? I'm especially curious about portraits shot at 90mm focal length, with an aperture of F/2.4 (I understand that F/2.4 is the widest aperture at 90mm). Could you please post an example image, so that I can evaluate the DOF and the bokeh?

Regards,
Mischa

I'm using a 2GB 150X Transcend SD card with no problems... -Norm

Hi Mischa. I don't find that the battery lasts any less than today's cameras. The only issue I find is the price - $89 for a spare battery. I know that there are less expensive generic versions, but I've heard nothing but problems from them. There is virtually no shutter lag. There is focus lag and I put it a little bit slower than the D-Lux 3. My images were lightly post processed. The lens is VERY SHARP. In fact so sharp that on rare occasions, moire can be a slight problem. -Norm

Hi Norm,

Thank you for your replies. Looks like a great camera to me. I'm afraid I fell in love with the Digilux-3 a bit, but that's just too expensive now; perhaps in a year time it's worth considering further. In search of the typical "Leica look", the Digilux-2 seems to fit the bill quite well. May I ask you what you paid for a secondhand? I've seen prices vary from 500 to 1000 euros for it...

Mischa

Hey Mischa - Thanks. I have the C-Lux 1, D-Lux 3 and Digilux 2. The Digilux 2 will provide richer colors. The C-Lux 1 will fit in a pocket, but of less quality in terms of images and the D-Lux 3 fits in very nicely in between. I paid $900 USD for my D2. Here are some more pics taken this weekend from the Digilux 2 if you care to take a look. -Norm

Thanks for nothing!

Love your pix.

Now I cannot sell my D2. I have a stable including a D2x (nice and can be used as a projectile PRN). My M8 is supposed to arrive next week and I went to college in Bal'more. How can I part with my D2 after seeing your photos?

...yep, that is indeed Baltimore, one of my favorite weekend hangouts. I just added some more pics of Annapolis from today's trip if you care to look.

The D2 will become a classic. The zoom range is very nice especially for street photography or for a quick grab camera for indoor shots. I'm certain you already know this as I'm sure you've had your D2 way longer than I. It will no doubt take a back seat when you get your M8, but I don't know if I'd sell it. Thanks again for the kind comments. -Norm

I really like these images, especially the ones of the "Alchemy" shop. Very rich colours indeed (though I've experimented with this image and converted it to B/W: looks fabulous!). The image quality seems unsurpassed for a 5MP camera, IMHO.

I also have the C-LUX1, but although I love its size, lens, looks and stabilizer, I find its responsiveness to PP not always so good. I shoot with the 'Natural' settings lately (fixed at ISO 80, of course), but it's really hard to do some decent sharpening afterwards without getting sharpening artefacts.

Your pictures have become a threat to my wallet, since I'm getting ever more serious considering a Digilux-2:-)

Regards and thank you,
Mischa

Man, did you put the nostalgic "woop" on me. Great pictures. Somehow I have always hoped that throwing money at equipment would make me a better photographer- seems like you have the real gift. I took my Digilux 2 out for a spin today and am always pleased with what it can do. The M8, save for the IR issue is tremendous. Thanks again! I will save the link to show my kids- it has been 3 or 4 years since we went to the Harbor.
