K200D poll ...

for a K110D price
I do not aggree with price it must be 2 timese chipper
Price is not so much established by the price-desire of the consumer - instead more by the competition and the feature-desire of the consumer !!! In this regard K100D is already VERY aggressive and it make A LOT MORE SENSE to aim for some profits and decent market share increase instead of a blind market share desire but no profits - remember the initial web-boom joke "it's true that we are loosing money but we'll make up in volume" :))

OK, let's forget for the moment the entire K10D frenzy and let's
dream about the future :)

1. Should K200D have:

a) 6 megapixels, even lower noise, other features (see below);
b) 8 megapixels, same/higher noise;
c) 10 megapixels, more noise.
6MP even lower noise (get a sensor from Fuji :-) ), better dynamic range
2. K200D battery + SSM support:

a) LiIon + SSM
b) 4 AA, no SSM
c) 6 AA + SSM
4AA no SSM, like now is perfect
3. K200D size + weight (will be linked to 2. battery!)

a) smaller/lighter than K100D (LiIon)
b) similar K100D (4 AA or LiIon)
c) similar K10D or bigger (6 AA or LiIon)
-- thus size the same, perhaps even smaller if they can
4. Most desirable new feature:

a) electronic preview on LCD with extra CCD (see Olimpus)
b) movie mode (800x600x30fps ?) and 'direct preview' with that mode
(during which optical viewfinder will be disabled)
c) other (describe).
oooo most desireable new feature
1. brighter OVF
2. better white balance settings adjustement (make it easier to use)
3. get the dust thingy too
----

now some SF (science fiction) wishes, or what would be nice but will never happen in this range or outright impossible

1. weather seal it

2. get SSM to work wiith 2CRV, 2RCRV some other battery, but still retain 4AA support - perhaps camera can sense what kind of power it has and enable features accordingly, now that would be an interesting feature

3. get autofocus "level", very fast (least accurate), fast (like now), accurate (slower but always dead on)
4. extra wheel/knob (for ISO)

5. extra button or two which can be assigned a function that we want to from the menu
6. flip out LCD screen (like prosumers, specifically KM A200/A2)

that's enough for now I think :)

a billion of someting is an awful lot of anything

I like this poll... :-)

1. 8 Megapixels would be nice. It might keep costs down, but I don't know of anyone other than Canon who makes one for SLR's.

2. Lithium ion battery and ssm... :-) Allegedly, part of the faster autofocus on the K10D is due to the battery.

3. I like the size of my K100D. That size would be fine.

4. Anti-dust feature like the K10D would be most desirable for me. Movies would be awesome, but I just find that unlikely for Pentax. Maybe a Samsung version, though. :-)

Good poll... It's fun to dream about what might be... :-)

1. Should K200D have:
...
6MP even lower noise (get a sensor from Fuji :-) ), better dynamic
range
Actually I had that in mind when I created the question - also please note:

a) as far as I know the dynamic range of K100D is now second only to one model from Fuji, and better than 5D !

b) a Fuji-type sensor might help with a very important consumer-like claim - with a 6 megapixel fuji type they will be able to claim 12/6 megapixels - WHICH WILL MAKE MARKETING INCREDIBLY HAPPY - and still have amazing high ISO and 6-megapixel-like sharpness !!!!
oooo most desireable new feature
1. brighter OVF
That doesn't seem possible - 100% coverage is max, bigger magnification goes to lower brightness - even Canon 1Ds MkII (7000$) only has 0.7x and that one has 2.25 times more light to work with (1.5x * 1.5x); it might remain as a desire for a full-frame K1D :)
3. get the dust thingy too
That's something you can bet on :)
now some SF (science fiction) wishes, or what would be nice but
will never happen in this range or outright impossible

6. flip out LCD screen (like prosumers, specifically KM A200/A2)
That will go great with my suggestion of 'direct view' and movie mode :))

1. Should K200D have:
a) 6 megapixels, even lower noise, other features (see below);
b) 8 megapixels, same/higher noise;
c) 10 megapixels, more noise.
a)
But the market will demand c).
2. K200D battery + SSM support:
a) LiIon + SSM
b) 4 AA, no SSM
c) 6 AA + SSM
a)

I like the AA option, but I'd rather be able to take advantage of new lens features.
3. K200D size + weight (will be linked to 2. battery!)

a) smaller/lighter than K100D (LiIon)
b) similar K100D (4 AA or LiIon)
c) similar K10D or bigger (6 AA or LiIon)
a)
I may pass on the K10D for this reason.
4. Most desirable new feature:
a) electronic preview on LCD with extra CCD (see Olimpus)
b) movie mode (800x600x30fps ?) and 'direct preview' with that mode
(during which optical viewfinder will be disabled)
c) other (describe).
c)
Separate ISO button/control
Compressed DNG option

While some of your dreamers have tried to change the laws of
physics ... there is a possibility that you're missing: 10MP, lower
noise. Without changing the laws of physics this requires a bigger
pixel and hence a bigger sensor: 1.3x crop fixes it. Within the
same back to reality constraint, a 1.3x crop sensor with a mere 8MP
would give lower noise than the 6MP cameras (so this is what to
vote for if you want ISO6400). Both would be more expensive sensors
than the 1.5x crop sensor (another law of physics remains unbroken)
which would be more suitable for a K1D (to challenge the EOS 1D Mk
II)...
That makes a lot more sense than you believe - but for K1D - today I think that sensor-based IS will work better with some sensor crop - at least 1.1x or 1.2x, so it really makes sense to have at some point a 1.1x-1.2x crop 12 megapixel K1D (which will still have better noise than K10D) with Pentax IS and multiple A/D converters (like D200) and something like 6 fps shooting (and a 2 picture HDR mode that can be handheld with the 31mm limited at around 1/10s). However the price at the end of 2007 for body only can be at best 1499 US$ :)

... wants to answer I might start counting the results in 24 hours ...

c

But If I had my choice it would be 20 plus megapixel.

2. K200D battery + SSM support:

c) 6 AA + SSM

A

But If I had my choice it would be new technology such as satelite fed solar with battery back up.

3. K200D size + weight (will be linked to 2. battery!)

a) smaller/lighter than K100D (LiIon)
b) similar K100D (4 AA or LiIon)

c

I like the camera bigger. twice the size of a K100D. Feels better and made of titanium with kevlar grip.

4. Most desirable new feature:

a) electronic preview on LCD with extra CCD (see Olimpus)

b) movie mode (800x600x30fps ?) and 'direct preview' with that mode (during which optical viewfinder will be disabled)

c) 7 inch LCD/plasma 1024 pixels, gps hook up, laser flash assist, commander mode built in, mp4 player, 7.1 surround sound, MPEG5, machine gun 8 fps, mega huge buffer (Gigabyte), wifi, USB3, PDA, and capabilty to use 3 different types of media storage.

OK, some people really dream a loong way into the future :)

I'd be happy if they took the K100D and just added a pentaprism, internal wireless flash controller (disable the SR when in use if that's the problem), and programmable function button to give faster access to metering modes. I guess support for the in lens focus motors would be nice as well.

Murray

K100D with Penta Prism
That's an interesting point - I believe that just by itself the pentaprism will only have like 0.2-0.3% better brightness than a pentamirror but will add some weight and price, normally you would want the entire system around it (with coverage and magnification and eyepoint) in order to really see the difference ...

I want a camera that has a De Lorean mode, so it can transport me to a time that doesn't have annoying forum threads.

Basically I would go for an ist D (with same controls) with the control pad changed into a joystick, sensitivity modes, SR, weather sealed and dust reduction from K10D, better IQ, bigger buffer (say 20 raw files)...
Leave the rest unchanged (so I settle for 6 MPix and AA batteries)
