Don't buy anything!

It amazes me at the constant speculation and hand wringing that goes on here. Do any of you ever buy anything without fear of missing a good deal a few days from now? Be honest.

Did you skip buying some milk because it might be on sale next week?

Did you skip buying a car when you needed a new car because there could be a better model released in a few months?

Did you skip buying toilet paper because a softer roll is rumored to be released next week?

Sh*T or get off the pot already! If you need a camera then buy one. If you don't then don't waste your time here or our time by asking for advice when the fear of spending a paycheck or two has you paralyzed with fear because Nikon might release a newer/better/cheaper/smaller/prettier model in time for Christmas. Nikon is always developing and or releasing new models. If you live in fear you'll never have a new camera.

Meanwhile the rest of us just shoot with what we've got and somehow learn to live with the fact that just because a newer/better model WILL be released eventually, it won't render our current cameras obsolete.

Image in advance for the whiners that complain about every post must have an image. Taken with a 10.5 2.8 DX Fisheye. Pointing that out for the DX will be obsolete if/when Nikon ever releases a FF digital body. Guess what? I'm not missing any images I wanted while waiting on future tech. I have what I need now and if I see something I'd rather be using later on then I'll buy it.

Rant for the day done. Let the whining, complaining, crying begin. Happy D40 speculating by the way...

A lot of wisdom here... but, the digital camera market has been quite a bit different from the milk, car and toilet paper markets in that you don't typically see newer, better, cheaper versions of those products continually announced. Imagine what things would be like if you purchase a brand new, let's say, Honda Accord, and then within six to twelve months, Honda announced that the new version would be "shipping soon" and that it gave you 25% more horsepower, a better audio system, the leather seats are now included, and all at 5% lower cost. You'd think twice about pulling that trigger, no?

I've been using my D70 for 2 1/2 years and still making great images with it...

Image quality wise I am very happy with it and have made 20x30 inch prints that look real nice and make 12x18 inch prints for camera club print competition that look awesome...

Of course I would like a D200 for some of the features such as weather sealing, larger viewfinder and LCD etc...

Because I already have a great working camera I can afford to wait till prices come down more before I buy a D200...

I will wait till the spring and save some money by waiting...

I'm not doing without. I'm still making photographs...

If you don't already have a camera I agree with you to just buy now and starting taking pictures...

If you already have a DSLR and just want to upgrade time is on your side by waiting...

Just my opinion...

I love it, but its fun to watch the new stuff come out. I jumped the gun with the D80 because the D50 didn't cut it for me. Anyway, good rant, I had a good one going on last week.

Amen.

:-)

You have hit the nail on the head and are 100% correct, rant or not.

Amazing how many people ask advice on what camera to buy or if they should upgrade instead of just enjoying taking pictures. I wonder if they do this with other potential purchases they need to make.

I suspect, though, that these are the people who buy equipment for equipment's sake and not as much because they enjoy taking pictures.

Ignore the posters who tell you to click on by these threads or find fault with your comparisons.

I enjoyed my Monolta D7i for 4 years before I upgraded to a DSLR and you won't find any threads from me asking advice on which camera to buy or whining that the latest offering didn't have this or that feature or was too noisy at 3200ISO.

I take pictures!.....and enjoy.

....but with a fresh vision!

That simply great photograph proves that our minds are the single most piece of equipment that needs continual updating & keeping in a "fresh mode"....

.....the cameras are simply extensions of that vision/creativity.....

.....the tools to express that same vision/creativity!

Great point: we all needed that.

Don't forget the downsides of it. The peeling grip issue that plaques all "pro" level bodies with the rubbery grip plaques the D200 also. I've had to reattach mine twice. The larger viewfinder is a bonus but it still isn't at my standard yet. I really would like a F100 equivalant view. The focus indicator is nice but requires a certain techniqe with MF lenses at wide apeture because of the huge amount of slop in it. It also lacks the incredibly useful arrows (as in the D2X and F100 for example). The weather sealing is a bonus but it doesn't appear to be sealed in the one area that keeps causing me problems (recently had to take apart one of my D100 bodies because of this) that is in the joint at the back of the viewfinder and between the part that moves when you make a diopter adjustment. I've added an eyepiece adapter and cover that will hopefully protect it. As a bonus it is durable as advertised. Mine has hit the concrete once, been slammed into a steel barrel, and hit the floor bouncing off a steel floor ashtray on the way. It still works and nothing is out of alignment. Personally I'd get a D80 instead if I didn't already have a D200 and plan a D2X later for compatibility/metering with my MF primes.

True. I have enough cameras now that I can afford the same luxury. I'm actually looking at a second system now for certain prime offerings.

I agree with you Bob. Nice to hear from you. :)
