Can anyone tell me if there is a reference for suggested settings on Coolpix cameras for things such as: Action Shots, Night Shots, Snow, etc. ? i.e. Action Shots=Shutter priority, spot metering, ISO 200, etc. Thanks.

I'm sure there are many suggestions in Peter iNova's e-book, I haven't gotten around to buying one yet. In general, the same things apply here as apply to film photos, greater ISO=more grain (in digital, it's called noise). Use a higher shutter speed to stop action. CP99X seems to like to pre-focus or manual focus to speed up action shots, cuts down on the delay. For snow and ice scenes, try exposure compensation of +0.7 for cloudy and +1.3/1.7 for sunny. I used +0.7 a few weeks ago and the cloudy shots were perfect. I tend to like cloudy conditions or the sweet light, as in film, digitals don't handle high contrast too well, though they do better at it than slide film. I do not spot meter, I have found that Nikon's matrix meter is accurate for about 95% of what I shoot. The remainder is using some compensation of some sort, as mentioned above. To keep noise down, I almost always use ISO 100. Experiment and find out what you like.

Baywing..thanks for the reply. I experimented a lot after the snowfall we just got. I found out that +2.0 exposure compensation was too much on a sunny bluebird day. You are probably right that 1.3 would be much better. I was also playing around with the Macro setting and found out that the manual focus produced much better shots than the Auto focus when taking pictures of melting ice off a bush one foot away. You are also right too about the metering..I prefer matrix. I also agree with the ISO 100 setting..anymore you get noise. Thanks again. Rob
