There seems to be a lot of criticism of the 400D on this forum, and its kit lens. Thought people might be interested in these shots I have taken over the past month. Combination of the kit lens (which I think is good!) and a Sigma 70-300 zoom. I am delighted with the results and I'm still learning how to use it.

Congratulations on your new XTi. I love mine!

You've got some really nice photos here......good job. Great job actually!

Cracking shots, Busterjet. You've captured the light really well, particularly in the images of Skye.

I suppose it shows that seeing the shot and knowing your camera is more important than expensive optics when it comes to producing good pictures.

It is good that you are pleased with your new camera, but reduced images such as these demonstrate only that the camera works, and that you have a good sense of composition. But of the camera they tell us nothing. Any modern dslr with inexpensive lenses will take images like these viewed on a monitor.

Let me translate:

"Your 400D and shots looks great, but for whatever reason, it kills me to have to say so."

I was thinking along the same lines, also the phrase 'theres always one isn't there' sprang to mind.

Still i'm sure that someone like Ken Croft who clearly has issues with the 400D has tested it thoroughly under strict laboratory conditions and is due to post his complete and conclusive test results and pictures shortly?

Or maybe he hasn't got one (or a clue what he's talking about?)

Hope you enjoyed our beautiful island, some great pics of Skye there, why only half the bridge though, was the tour guide charging you per foot of picture? :)

Mike

Thanks for everyone's comments, I'm glad you like the photos, I'm so pleased with my new camera.

I have no problem with Ken's comments, but my photos were not intended to analyse the camera's technical prowess in-depth, I'll leave that to dpreview. I just wanted to show how a newbie to DSLR can get excellent shots "out of the box". I'm not interested in analysing shots at 100% to see how they compare to other cameras, I'm just having fun with my new toy.

Mike, Skye is absolutely beautiful, I will be sure to return sometime soon. I must confess to a lot of Photoshopping of the sunrise photos by the way. The sky was not quite that red!

What on earth is wrong with this forum? I make an honest comment and I get an attempt at abuse. As it happens, I have a 350D, and when Canon add spot metering to their budget dslr, I will buy one. I tried a 400D when they first appeared. I liked it but I decided to stick with what I have.

Of course I liked his shots, and it does not hurt me to say so, but newcomers should be warned not to judge a camera by a few small images posted on this forum. That is all I meant, but sure, perhaps I could have put it a better way.
