Guys, I have a 350d but the 1.8" LCD is really a pain. In the sunlight is almost impossible to see anything. I've read the 30D review and it looks like to have a good improvement in this area but it appears the only real upgrade is the the new 2.5" LCD.

The other thing that makes me not consider the 400d is the plastic made body. I'm missing the metal alloy body fro my old EOS 5 ( A2 in US ).
Do you have already heard something about the launching of 30d replacement ?

Rumors are flying everywhere and it's just that...rumors. some call it 40D while others call it 50D. Whatever it is, it's under wrap and won't know until Feb. Whatever it is, I won't be interested since I have a 30D which will last me a long time. maybe in 2010 I'll think about getting another dslr camera.

30D 2 1/2" screen is nice, but you'll still have the same problem with the 1.8 inch lcd.

In my years of watching this forum, no one that I have seen has come out with the correct timing and configuration of their next model. As many have said. "Those who talk don't know, and those who know don't talk." For what it's worth, my guess on the next x0D model is a full frame body coming out in August, not February, but I could be wrong.

After Photokina last month, the next big photo gear exhibition is the PMA in the US in February, so people are speculating that cameras nearing the end of their 18 month life cycle (5D?) will be replaced then. Especially since next year is Canon's 70th birthday and they are expected to celebrate with a big 'splash'. Also, they need to respond to increased competition/ new initiatives from Pentax, Nikon and Sony in the DSLR market which until now they have dominated.

It's all just speculation, though plausible enough.

the 30D will give a larger LCD that you cannot see... i dont even think about using the display in sunlight...the viewfinder has everything i need.

If you believe the only difference between the 350 and 30D is the LCD display size then I suggest you do more research as there is alot more differences than that. I know, I made the switch. Gerry

I have the 20D love it, did not get the 30D cause very little change in it. 40D is the rumor, and should be annouced in Feb sometime. That is only 4 months, and that will go fast this time of year with all the holidays. So I am waiting. I wait 2 or there models before upgrading on anything cameras, software, etc.

Wait but be prepared to pay a bit more. The 30D should have a significant upgrade to it, meanwhile the XT optically will give you everything the 30D will give you.

Terry, The full frame would be great. I have a 24-105 L and this 1.6 crop factor sometimes is a problem and makes me switch to the kit lens.
Thanks for your time to support me.

Harry, this info about the 70th anniversary is really important. As per the DPreview, the 30D was a little disapointing due to the very small diference to the 20D. It sounds something you have to do pushed by the market by let some 'suprises' to other moment. Maybe a full frame at a more affordable price. Here in Brazil, 'affordable' is a little more expensive than US ( in Europe the prices are also higher, isn't ? ) the 30D with the kit lens is about US 2.500.....due to the importation taxes...

Thanks for your support.

Also, you cannot trust the LCD to give an accurate representation of the picture. The LCD is really only good for seeing if the picture is framed correctly and reading the histogram to see is exposed properly.

Guys,

Thank you all for the info. Very interesting to have so many diferent opinions in just some hours from diferent locations.
All of them were very important.

It won't be any sooner than February; the gap between the 60D & 10D was 12 months but every other model came out 18 months after it's predecessor. Don't count on full frame; I strongly suspect a follow-up to the 5D in the spring. There's a slim chance the next xxD could be a 1.3x crop, but my money would be on Canon keeping the 1.6x crop in the line for at least 1 more generation - it keeps the costs down and allows them to have more than 1 model that takes the EF-S lenses.

As was mentioned, you can't see the LCD even at max brightness in the sun. That being said, the size of it is nice & its just one of many differences between the two cameras.

However, if the LCD & the build are the only issues you have with the Xt, I would wait at least until the 30D replacement which I think will come next fall. The 5D replacement will come next spring I think.

The 30D has spot metering, the 20D, 350D, 400D do not. All the Nikons do. What are Canon thinking of!

canon are thinking that the rebel line is the tempter to get folks into DSLR, with the xxD line the prosumer upgrade.

their strategy makes sense and is working...35% market share the last i looked.

The 30D LCD is no brighter than the 20D LCD, only bigger.

We have "reasonable" expectations based solely on history.

I have had My 30D for 6 months now, and still learning some of the hidden features.
But one I love and really depend on is the spot metering.
Second, the LCD to verify results. when I need reading glasses as it is.

In bright sun, I never worry about it. What you had in the viewer should be fine.

One can always duck under something to see it better. Or tuck it under jacket. Or in the bag.

You can't see the 15 inch screen on your laptop either, so that washes out that theory.

When I'm doing detailed views in close quarters of machinery like under the hood

and things sticking out all around, the point I'm looking at gets missed if on auto multi point focus
otherwise. I'm also using the built in flash.

I find it exceptional and flawless in manual mode and setting the flash output to match my style.

If one were to use the same view in automatic and flash and being within 3 feet to 1 foot of object, it would be deleted repeatedly.

Even last night during our massive Halloween special we do here for all the kids out doors.
We logged in 380 kids who stopped by.

The camera did a wonderful job. The flash as small as it is and the distance I was at, You'd think I had 2 potato masher heads running the show.

I'll always want in the end a full frame sensor, but so far I'm quite impressed.
It can only get better with L in front of it.

The only thing I really want that I don't need is the 80GB viewer Canon came out with.
It matches the features of the camera and same battery.
Now that is cool.

You can always wait for a better camera, and for certain there is a better one always around the corner. But if photography is your passion then you could consider getting the 30D now. It is a great camera with more than enough features to make great pictures, including decent enlargements. Remember, it is the eye and skill of the photographer that captures the great shots that make the memorable pictures, not the camera.
