Macros with 7D + Sigma ef-500 dg super

Hi folks!

Just want to get some CC on a couple of macros I shot this weekend. Tried out my Sigma ef-500 dg super flash both wireless and regular. And yes, I like to take pictures of reptiles :) These are all captive bred and the shoots were taken threw glass.

Elaphe dione, 7D + Tokina 100 mm f/2.8 macro (at least i think so) + Sigma ef-500 dg super:



Psammophis sibilans. 7D + Tokina 100 mm f/2.8 macro + Sigma ef-500 dg super:



Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix laticinctus), 7D + Sigma 70-300 dg macro (non apo) + Sigma ef-500 dg super wireless (!):

Those shots look excellent. Looks like the Sigma's giving you good exposure.

Nice!

I really like the 3rd for the overall reddish tone and because of the snake itself. I do not know what he was thinking when you took the shot but he does not look friendly at all.

Thomas: Thanks man! I've only had the camera for a couple of months, so that kind of comments always makes one happy :)

stef70: Yeah, thats my favorite to, I love the shadow I got with the wireless flash. The shot doesn't look as reguar with the shadow. Haha, I'm glad I had like 3 feet and 4 mm glas between us.

The pics are awesome, good job!!

Any issues using the Sigma? I had one but it was not compatible with my 7D. I really liked it with the A2 and want to get a new one that works with the 7D.

Your worrying me !! why wasn't it compatible with your 7d ??

I'm having trouble getting to grips with mine and i was thinking it was just me ....perhaps not?

The early models were known to not be compatible, which is the one I had. Check the threads regarding serial numbers and compatibility. It was obvious that the early ones would not work on the 7D/5D. The most recent (last 6months or so) units are compatible. Read your user manual for limitations. I believe the #'s 700XXXX and up are the ones that will work. But do a search of the threads regarding Sigma serial numbers.
Or call Sigma. I think yours is ok based on the results.

I wanted to know if you were having any problems using the flash, any drawbacks such as constant over or under exposure issues.

Mine should be OK . I got it yesterday

Well Yeah ...i'm getting both, But then I don't really know what I'm doing with it .

Really nice pics you have there - good work! I have the Sig Super too and haven't gotten around to using it yet for macros. Your images definitely makes me feel confident that it'll be great for that kind of work. Did you use any diffusers or just straight flash?
 
By the way, It says in a paper you get with the flash "If you use Dynax 7 Digital / Maxxum 7 Digital switch the flashguns exposure mode from TTL mode to High Speed Sync. Mode." (FP). Even if you don't use shutterspeeds over 160... Works great for me, but with the bouncer I get pretty good exposures without the FP mode to.

Really nice. I don't want to slight snakes, as I'm a huge animal lover, but you've taken what could have been a very boring animal, and shown it off really well. Your exposures are spot on too.
