brave gf poses for my first portraits(7pics)

Just a suggestion: you need to watch that nothing in the background is "growing out of her head" behind her. Watch for poles, trees, VW, etc. But she models very well, and you can have a lot of fun shooting her photo's.

Currently shooting a D70 and N50. Have a 'F.'

Also shooting with Konica 35mm SLRS (T3 and FT-1) with numerous Hexanon Lenses. Printer: Canon i9900.

Regarding RAW, WB, etc...

With RAW (i.e. NEF) files you have the original sensor measurements before they are turned into a photo by computation. So, many camera adjustments can be changed in the computer since the computer is doing what your camera did following its settings. With a JPEG from the camera you are stuck with the original camera settings. Anyway, to take white balance as an example, you can try all the WB settings in the computer to see what they look like and pick the one you like.

My prejudice is to get Nikon Capture, or Capture NX. Then all the edits you come up with are saved in the NEF file without changing the RAW data. You can edit the photo and print from Capture. If you need PS for something Capture can't do Capture will transfer into PS or Elements with a TIFF file.

I leave the WB set to AUTO. When editing in capture I can always change the setting if I don't like what AUTO came up with.

The important thing is that most photos can be perked up a lot in "post processing", and Nikon's NEF files give you the data to work with. (Although some Pros, such as wedding photographers, have such volume they learn the settings to get good JPEGs straight out of tthe camera.)
