Cutting off heads ...

Its so they don't have to have a model release!!

I have to say that I've noticed the chopping of heads and its not good as a general trend. If this pic above is real (and I have my doubt as its so bad LOL) then all I can say is that I understand the reasoning in removing the focal point of interest in the eyes ..... but I'm constantly drawn to stare at the amputated head in horror !!! I don't see anything else. Is it an ad for underpants or something ... I can't remember .... but the head .... the head ....

You know what... I agree. They cropped out the eyes. If I was going to do that, I think they should at least crop out the nose too, maybe the mouth. It does look funny as a chop perfectly through the center of the face.

Thanks goodness you don't want to lop off heads nihon-to style....or do you:)

Just a creative choice.

Along with plenty of others, so its not a new fad, but Avedon was the one who inspired me.

Wow...I guess you have to be a photographer to miss the whole point of a catalogue.

Cutting off heads is perfectly aaceptable in fashion photography but perhaps not in portriats. Then again, maybe it is acceptable in portraits. Ever see a REALLY tight head shot, or a face shot? It's just a different crop, but still a crop.

I think I read a thread where someone suggested that it was a male art director, wearing black that was responsible. How simplistic. The very large Eddie Bauer company with all it's resources, talent, board of directors, etc, came down to a single person making that descision. Get real.

Much thought and discussion went into the details of producing that catalogue. The art director, took his or her cue, from the marketing department.

Maybe, just maybe, the whole point of cropping heads was to generate interest by having people talk about the head cropping that occured. In that case, it worked!
