5D Batteries

I have recently purchased new batteries for my 5D and they are not lasting anywhere close to what the original Canon battery did when it was new. I have purchased 2 batteries from B&H and 2 from Adorama (Targus batteries), all non-Canon batteries. After being fully charged, when I put them into the 5D the batteries don't even show as fully charged on the camera display, and they wear out very quickly! When I put these same batteries in my 20D they show as fully charged on the camera display.

Will only Canon batteries provide the maximuym battery life in the 5D?

What are your experiences? Thanks!

..than the original canon battery. But maybe I'm just lucky - I've heard of others that have had them go bad. Just not me. Always get the ones that are 1500 mAh or more. They actually last longer than the canon ones.

Even though they dont' say you need to, I always discharge my batteries whenever possible before re-changing them. I think that helps. It seems to have worked for me - my old 10D battery (1100 mAh) still works like it did when it was new.

between the Canon charger and the third party batteries. I only use Canon batteries and they last very long time. Compare to the L lenses, the cost of batteries are next to nothing.

There will be 100 posts after mine to tell you which third party batteries they use and to claim all their third party batteries last longer than the Canon's. :)

Because Canon make better Lithium of course.

There will be very few factories that make these items, and they will all be very similar.

All of them that I have are Made in Japan.

One thing I have noticed different amongst them is different material for the connectors - some "silver"; some "gold" (I'm guessing neither is silver or gold).

Also that some Canon-badged ones have plastic moulding identical to the third party ones (colour and fine detail), and others have plastic moulding with a lighter colour matt finish and the words "CANON Li-ion Battery Pack".

I've found them impossible to differentiate in their life expectancy or their capacity to hold charge even though they say a number of different mAh capacities.

If batteries are worn out, due to long term use, one should/could put them in a freezer for about 24H. It’s better to put them in a small plastic sandwich bag before you put them into the freezer. Afterwards, the batteries will last longer. (same works for old mobile phone batteries etc).

Thanks for all of the comments so far. All of the non-Canon batteries I just bought are at least 1700 ma, and I have charged them with two different Canon chargers. One charger has room for two batteries and the other came with the 5D and just charges one battery.

Do you usually take the battery off the charger as soon as the light indicates a full charge, or is it OK to leave it on the charger over night?

The non-Canon batteries work great in my 20D and last a long time, but not in my 5D.

I may try going back to just Canon batteries.
