I have several Epson inkjet printers and am thinking of a change. I've looked at the large format 1220CSE printer by HP. It is a tank in comparison to the Epsons. Very robust looking. I like the idea of replacing the print heads with a new cartridge change. I have an Epson 900 now with a print head problem that would require a repair cost at least double its current value, making it a trash can item.

What I want to know is the level of print quality I can expect with the 1220C series of HP printers in comparison to my Epson 900, 980 and my 870. I like the idea of being able to do large format prints, and I like the build quality of the hp printer. I also like the possibility of getting the 1220 C/PS model for a $100 more and get Post Script capability.

How about it. Would I be satisfied with the photo quality of the 1220 after being used to the Epsons.--Dave Lewis

I don't have any real experience with the Epsons, but I own an 1120Cse HP. (the predecessor of the 1220). I use it extensively for engineering applications, with the occasional photo. It produces very respectable photos, but I can't say that any of my prints have "knocked me out".

I put small photos in reports, and similar projects, and they look very nice. I haven't tried many large prints since acquiring better cameras, but I'm sure some of my early attempts were my fault, rather than the printer's. I'm sure the 1220 has improvements over mine and the pictures are probably adequate for all but the most demanding tasks. At least, as far as 4 colors can go.

Dave,
I have a HP1120 at work and a Epson 1280 here at home. While
the HP prints good pics it is not in the same class as the 1280. Side by side
comparisons, the 1280 wins hands down!

Hope this helps.

Sorry about that. I hit the wrong button. It looks like it might be comparable to my 900 printer which is a four color printer that really prints nice reports with pictures like you have experienced. I'd be pleased if it were of that quality.--Dave Lewis

Wait a minute. The 1220 has photoret III.. I believe the 1120 had photoret II. And the 1220 also has the 2400x1200 mode which the 1120 did not have.. I have a 1220c. The Photo's come out very nice.. Basically like all the new hp's. O yeah also the 1120's I believe were 10 picoliters and the 1220's are 5 picoliters. The quality is much better on the 1220 over the 1120. I am waiting for a 785 epson. The 6 colors on the epson print better photos then the 3 color hp's, but the 1220 is a very nice printer. I am very happy with my 1220c

Gosh, thanks for shooting that my way, Charlotte. That is some
really good information. I think I'm going to spring for one.

Well Charlotte, I've read a bunch of the user reviews and found that paper handling with heavy papers is very undependable. The feed rollers leave marks on the finished print. Margins are inconsistent. The manual feed simply doesn't work. Some users were pleased with the performance, but the ones who weren't were the ones who used it the way I want to use it. I have a whole office full of utility printers. I want a large format one that is tough and consistent and has great output.

Sounds like a printer for me to avoid. Thanks again for giving me that link. Those user reviews were what I was looking for on here.

HI Dave

I have the 1220c and the epson 870. The Epson wins hands down on flesh tones, shadow detail and yes heavy paper.--Steven
