Attention anyone thinking of buying a camera in the UK....

Jessops have anounced they will not only match any UK Internet price. But also take off an extra 10% on any camera.

They also do 12 months interest free credit on purchases over £200.

I bought today a Fujifilm S6500 FD advertised in shop at £349

I got it for £255 interest free. thats only about £20 per month !!!

Can anyone beat this deal ?

Thanks for posting this info.

Do you have a link to the announcement and the Ts & Cs?

The only terms and conditions are as follows.

You must print out inernet offer with price including postage. They will then deduct a further 10% off this .

It must be a UK model i.e (fotosense, purleygadgets)

Thats about it. The advert i found in Fridays Daily Mail.

I took the advert in with me but they seemed well aware of there new policy and had no problems whatsoever.

Go there now before they change there mind :)

About time...they must have been badly burnt by the stupid pricing structure they introduced in their stores. I know from talking with several staff how difficult yhey found selling cameras since they went on the stock market or whatever happened. The prices which were once very competitive, became laughable overnight... I guess a show of strength for stock holders....well...lets hope they learnt a lesson.. Maybe some management moved on?

It's actually 10% of the difference I believe but that's still very competitive and given a choice I would always prefer to buy over the counter if I can. I wonder though, if they don't have the stock, will they order it for you at the internet beating price ? Some of the stores are pretty small and don't carry much stock I have found.

GOP

You go in one store and they will happily prices match, you go in another and they deny their published policy, you go back to the first store and they suddenly won't price match or they will but not on a saturday because they need to check with head office.

I bought my 5d from online store warehouseexpress for £1600 after rebate. Jessops were advertising at £1850 after rebate. I tried to price match and the manager said it was impossible to get the 5D for £1600 - he knew, he checked the internet every night. When I pointed out warehouseexpress had been selling at this price for 2 months he called me a liar... Needless to say Jessops didn't get my custom.

They are also very hit or miss on stock with different stores carrying some products, others not. They also tend to take JIT stocking to extreme and only carry ONE item in stock at a time.

There was a time when Jessops really did offer a fantastic service, way better in almost every respect but that was a long time ago. These days I think they see themselves as the new Dixons...

the trouble with jessops is that they are fast becoming the tesco's of the photographic world !

hopefully they will give up soon and let the real camera shops that remain in the uk , get on with the job of provididng the service that the photographers of this country deserve

rant over :-)

I disagree. I've had 2 excellent experiences with Jessops.

First I ordered a Minolta 7D in from another store. This was approx 2 weeks before I went off on another teaching trip to China. They had delivery problems and 2 days before I was due to set off it wasn't there - it had been sent to another store by mistake. I went into the store to remonstrate with them - the result being that the manager got up early the next day, drove to another store in another city, picked it up, brought it back and had it in for the day before I went away. If that's not customer service then I don't know what is.

While I was away the camera developed a fault (the infamous black first frame. For those interested, this is a pretty common problem with 7ds - intermittant but irritating. Upon switching the camera on for the first time in a while and taking a picture either the mirror sticks or flips out of sync or something... Resulting in a black (or seriously underexposed if using a long shutter speed) first frame)

Despite not being able to replicate this in the shop, the manager dealt with it immediately, accepted my explanation, and rather than send it off to repair offered me a straight swap with one from another branch - a far quicker and easier option. He gave me a call when they had the replacement in branch, I popped in, swapped it, and left. Total time without a camera, 5 mins while a clerk checked everything out.

Sure, they have a lot of temp staff in there for the Xmas rush, but get talking to one of the experienced staff and they're excellent.

I found Jessops excellent when I needed to get some real experience of the various cameras I was considering - in the sure and certain knowledge that I would then buy online elsewhere usually for a 30-40% saving as the Jessops pricing was ridiculously uncompetitive.

Always found the staff helpful and knowledgeable, had they had a real "internet price beating" policy a few weeks ago I would have bought from them no problem.

I once visited their HQ in Leicester, and that store had EVERY part, from EVERY manufacturer that you could buy in the UK. Sometimes they even had non UK bits...

Now they are a 'Pile it high, sell it cheap' outfit, only they don;t 'sell it cheap'!!!

I find for every assistant who DOES know their way around, they have 5 who don't. I've had an assistant tell me to my face thatOlympus don;t make the lens I wanted to buy, just because Jessops didn;t list it? Needless to say, I have the lens, but not from them...

And don't get me started on the Nikon T2 adaptor hunt, for my son to put the 500 mirror lens on his D50?

As I said, inconsistent.

A particular annoyance with both my local branches is their paper and ink supplies.

I can never - and I mean never - juat pop in and pick up an ink cartridge or some paper because they are always short of one or another colour ink and they do not keep reliable paper stocks.

I'm lucky to have two branches within walking distance but even then I would say that between them a visit only offers about a 1 in 3 chance of finding an A4 pack of heavyweight matte and about a 1 in 10 chance of picking up a full inkset for even the popular Epson printers.

After too many wasted trips I've given up and buy online even though it costs me more...

Jessops are offering 110% of the difference (between their price and advertised lower price) that's an extra 10% on the difference - NOT of the whole price.

Thinking of getting a Nikon D200 from them

I went into my local Jessops store this evening armed with a printout from the cheapest UK online supplier I could find, ready to buy a black Panasonic Lumix FZ50.

However, despite extensive stock of the FZ50, apparently (unlike the Ford motor company) you can have any colour FZ50 as long as it is NOT black.

In other words, Jessops are only stocking the silver FZ50. The computer records the sales lady searched showed no black stock anywhere.

It's not a big loss as I will just end up buying from the online retailer for another £15 but it would have been nice to buy locally. I did at least get to hold one of the silver ones and very nice it was too, but despite it being more attractive I thought than in the photos, I just feel I will always wish I had bought black if I don't.

I have to say in Jessops defence that I bought a 5d from them about a year ago and they had it at a good price at the time about 1950. This was before the rebate scheme and I walked in of the street and purchased it with no hassles. Like most siazable retail companies their prices come in waves. Sometimes they are a good price and other times not. I think they are the cheapest outlet at the moment for the canon 1d mk2n.

I have had no problems with jessops at all and I have bought quite a bit of kit from them but I don't go out with the intention of getting something at the lowest possible price. It might be down to the fact that I live quite close to a number of cheap camera shops here in the North West.

The last lens I bought a couple of weeks ago was the Canon 24-70L which I got on Jessops website and it was the cheapest around at £836 delivered. There were a few gripes about the new website mainly down to tracking the order status but other than that it was fine and delivered next day.

My advice though would be to do your homework, not just price but be certain what you are trying to buy is really what you want suitable for purpose etc, talk with the people when they are quiet, don't get pushy or iritated and walk away if you are not satisfied. In retail outlets today you have to pay premium for quality of staff/good informed advice, high street location etc. Unfortunatley the larger the size the lower value they put on their staff. Jessops is in this boat, some of their staff have a good knowledge of the kit they are selling and other don't. Also with large companies they play with their policies all the time hence the confusion.
