This "interpolated" movie issue, where the FZ50 is not recording in true 848x480 or 640x480 resolutions, is the FZ50 the only Panasonic camera that does this or does this affect their whole line or maybe just the models using the Venus Engine III?

FWIW I've shot a couple of movies with my FZ7 (Venus II engine) and I haven't seen the effect you see in FZ50 movies.

So it doesn't appear that this issue is related to using a Venus II or Venus III engine, as the FZ7 as posted by Joseph which uses the Venus II doesn't have this issue, but the FZ30 which also uses the Venus II does.

What about the LX2, FX3, FX50, FX07, L1, TZ1, FX01 etc...?

I'm sure there are many of you owners that own at least 1 of these cameras and have shot movies with them.

Does this only affect the FZ50 and FZ30?

each CCD has a live read-out... thats how we get live view and movie mode...

take your camera point it towards a set of straight horizontal lines as you watch carefully on the screen slowly rotate the camera, you'll start to notice a stepping pattern int he lines on the LCD... if you are taking a movie at the same time you'll see the same effect... but only on the horizontal lines as they are the only ones being upsampled. it would appear to be upsampled by a factor of 2 (for the 640x480 movie) you likely won't see this at 320x240

now why isn't this noticable on the vertical lines... its either that the cameras active read-out is 640 or more pixels horizontally.

Why can you see the same effect on the LCD screen? The FZ30 LCD has a resolution of 560x420. the FZ50 is 524x393... therefore the same 240 has to be upsampled but the 640 has to be downsampled and downsampling can be done without the stepping/rasterization effect.

I hope that helps explain it!

Well..... I can't see any of the horizontal line degradation you describe with either the fx01 or with the fz5. I guess having not seen it I still don't know what it is.
