Hi,

Does anyone know if any of the Canon Point & Shoot cameras can ddo a digital zoom in movie mode (to increase the zoom range)?

Cheers,
Helmut

All of them but one (S3IS) can only do digital zoom in movie mode. Only the S3 (I think) can do optical zoom in movie mode.

The list of camera's that can use optical zoom during movie recording is very small. I wish more camera's would add this ability. The general reason for leaving this out is that the zoom motor noise would intrude on the sounds being recording with the video.

Digital zoom is not very good because the quality of the video decreases as the zoom increases.

I think the justification for digital zoom is that the ccd picks up say 6mp, while only 0.3mp is needed for video, so you can digitally zoom 4.5X without losing quality.

Exactly - so you could in theory get nearly 10x zoom without loss of quality with a Point & shoot (if it also used optical) during movie mode.

That's not true. Yes, they use only a very small part of the CCD for the video, but when you do the digital zoom, it will be even smaller. It's like cropping small image, while trying to retain the same pixel count of let's say 320x240... so, you'll get jaggy picture coz the pixel is interpolated.

True. The problem that they never use optical zoom in P&S mainly because the zoom motor is too NOISY and it will be recorded in the video. WHile camera like S3iS has Ultrasonic motor just like normal video camera, that doesn't have any noise.

I've found that only a very small amount of digital zoom is acceptable on my A620. Perhaps 2X max. I wonder if the newer models that are advertising "safety zoom" will handle digital zoom during movies differently? That would be a nice plus. Has anyone with the G7, SD800 or SD900 tried digital zoom during movies yet?
