My idea of good company is the fellowship of clever, well-informed people, who have a great deal of conversation and liberality of ideas.

Good: no virus, no crash machine

Free: freeware. not trial version. may be some older version or with some special feature banded unless purchase.

I just want to try on some stitch to make a panorama. If it is fun and i m capable to create (both shoot and stitch), then i will consider to purchase an powerful software.

Autostitch is a demo. It does only suppor 8 bit. It has no GUI for straightening the panorama. It can only output JPEG. etc etc etc Apart from playing around with you will get rather irritated to try to use it seriously.

If you are serious you shall get some software that uses autostitch.

If you want free stuff - then go to http://hugin.sourceforge.net/ and then also get autopano-sift. Autopano-sift is based on the same theory as autostitch.

autopano-sift is still provided although autopano now is commercial. Thats a very nice gesture from the autopano team IMHO. It is somewhat questionable - as autostitch is patented. But ... it does not matter any more as autopano now is commercial and paying royalties to UBC.

If you are even more serious you shall buy autopano - it is using autostitch. ( http://www.autopano.net/ ) €99

Or maybe serif (www.serif.com). $49.95

As a side note - we at Proxel was negotiating with UBC to get a license. But they wanted lots of royalty even if we did not sell - so we could not afford as we were newly started. It was too risky.

Hmm maybe. Did not use it seriously so far (ie never printed a pano). Still, its a pretty powerful piece of software. The jpeg-only is a bummer since you have to feed it with readily-processed jpegs and only get jpegs out of it aswell...which gives the obvious constraints in postprocessing...but -a practical consideration: It takes ages to do a 6 Photo Pano with autostitch based on 3MB jpegs...So, how long would one have to wait for 60MB (6Tiffs)?

Also: I presume 16bit tiff files cannot be used anyways so how big is the avantage from 90%Quality 8bit jpegs to 8bit tiffs? Is it visible? If I print its usually from the former file format.

The OP wanted something for free. Since I am doing perhaps one pano every half a year I would likewise not want to pay for the software.

Thanks for the recommendation, I just took a look at that and it seems to be an interesting piece of software. Looks way more complicated than Autostitch where you can just open images and leave the rest to the program, though..it also appears that you need two other programs to do the panos (hugin and emblend)...kind of a hassle, isnt it? And: Is it capable of Tiff?
And (might be a stupid question): Isnt a 100% jpeg lossless anyways?

Somehow I still think for the casual Pano shooter who is not willing to pay for pano-software Autostitch is a good option due to its ease of use and good image quality. Having to process the TIFFs before also has an advantage since it is more handy than working on a 100MB pano...(again, I am talking about casual panoramists).

And it's got a surprisingly refined UI for a free program. I rather like it.

Bummer. Sounds like my recent dealings with a different company that holds certain IP that I want...
