I sent an email to Canon support, via their website, inquiring about the inability of my G1 to use a shutter speed faster than 1/250 in combination with a flash. Below is my message and their pitiful reply that followed.

ME:
I am unable to use any shutter speed above 1/250 when shooting
with my Speedlite 420EX flash. Even in Tv or M mode, if I set the
shutter to anything faster that 1/250, the camera will revert back to
that speed for the actual shot. I understand that 1/250 is as fast as
the shutter can sync with the flash, but I should be able to set a
faster shutter speed nonetheless. The manual makes no mention of any
such limitations.

Is this a known limitation with the G1 or is there something wrong with
my camera?

Canon:
Dear Larry,

Thank you for writing to us.
The following settings for shutter speeds.
8 -1/1,000 sec.
8 sec. shutter is available in Shutter Priority mode or Manual mode.
High speed shutter from 1/500 to 1/1,000 sec. are available only at F8
setting.
Slow shutter of 1.3 sec. and more operates with noise reduction.

I hope this answer addresses your concern. Please be sure to include
all previous correspondence with your reply.

Thank you for your interest in Canon. We look forward to assisting you
in the future.

Sincerely,

Do you think they even read the questions they get?

Are you sure you were talking to Canon? This sounds like Compaq, HP, Sony, BankAmerica, GE, Sears, etc.

Seems everyone has gone to bull... replies in the hopes you get lost. You must persist to get a real answer.

You're lucky they responded at all. Doing any kind of business via email is a frustrating ordeal no matter who the business.

It seems the telephone is still the way to go. Not a huge improvement, but at least they have to actually listen to and understand your question.

I personally do not understand why so many businesses treat email this way.

And just try to get them to send your bill email !!

I have an Epson Scanner and had problems getting the USB setup to work at first. I had email contact to a technician at Epson (just sent my first message through their website) and we wrote about three emails each in a few hours till I got the problem fixed. I was astounded!

Plus, to get the support, you don't have to fill out any forms or provide proof of ownership or anything. Epson's email support is an example for the other companies out there and if they made a good digicam, I'd buy it...

I think you are overly positive about Epson - Just ask anyone with a Epson printer who has upgraded to Windows XP. With the exception of a few new printers, Epson isn't upgrading the drivers. Iinstead you are stuck with XP legacy drivers which don't monitor ink levels and don't allow you to print at highest resolutions. Try to contact Epson about this issue!
