I know this is not a retouching question but since I visit this forum regularly, I decided to post it here...

We are going for a vacation to New York City in early december, Can some one point out what would be good locations to take pictures? Thanks for your suggestions!

I know I will shoot the usual manhattan sky line, statue of liberty etc....Going with an 11month old baby may not permit me to hunt for some differnt locations than usual...

Need to know some points, locations that you have found which offer something different than the usual shots...

Thanks!

It's New York City, one of the largest and most diverse cities in the world. There is something interesting on virtually every corner. Trust me, if you have any creativity at all, you won't run out options.

If you do need help, go to Flickr or PBase and enter "New York City" or "NYC" into the search field. Those are excellent places to get some ideas.

Since you asked - try going to New Jersey for a night skyline or even a pano opportunity - day or night.

Take the Path (NY/NJ subway) from the WTC to Exchange place. The Path runs from 33rd street as well. Check out the NJ Transit website for details.

The Exchange place station is right next to the water. If you continue to Hoboken (last and 3rd stop on this line) there are water views and about 1000 bars. But then you will have the baby with you! Take the ferry back to the World Financial Center, or the other destinations from Hoboken to Manhattan. There are good on water views from the ferry during the day.

BIt obvious, but I always like hitting the Empire State Building around dusk and gettings some pics off there. You can get some great shots as the city lights start to come up.

I would highly suggest going up to "Top of the Rock"

When you reach the upper observation deck, there are no fences or glass shields to block your view. Its better than the Empire State Building because there are no obstructions in front of you, its much less crowded and you get a killer view of the Empire State Building.

If you get a chance head up there and catch a nice sunset.

Full size tripods are not allowed but you can bring a small table top style tripod and you can set up on the edge.

the price of admission is worht it.
be sure to make reservations for a time slot before going.

If you have the time, access to a car, and clear day you might try a different perspective of the skyline from Eagle Rock Reservation off of I-280 in NJ. Its a park located on top of a 660 ft tall ridge about 15 miles west of Manhattan. You can get an uninterupted view of almost all of Manhatten Island from there as well as Staten Island and glipses of the other three boroughs of New York. Since I moved out of the area in 2002 I know they erected a nice 911 memorial up there as well. I used to get out a folding chair and watch the skyline change throughout the sunset hours till the lights came on from up there all the time. You need a day with low haziness to get good pictures though. South Mountain Reservation is about 10 miles south on the same ridge and is more forested. There are several views of southern Manhattan from Crest Drive in the park that might make a good photo with the fall foliage in the foreground. The park is a little harder to find though.

look out the window. Great details on the upper stories of older buildings.

go to Times Square, thre is a great hotel, Marriot Marquis, take the elevator to the top floor where there is a rotating restaurant/bar... Take a drink and a full turn in one hour with a view all over Manhattan ... And the elevators in the hotel are fenomenal too.... PLUS the TIMES SQUARE in the eve - unbelievable !

They will also allow you to reserve your trip to Liberty Island and nearby Ellis Island via the Internet, so you don't have to stand in long lines at the Ferry dock. Have a wonderful trip & a great time. Please post some pictures when you return.
All the best
