I am just curious on how others pack and what they bring in terms of camera gear when they are travelling. I am spending 2.5 weeks in Morocco and 1 week in Spain. The foucs of the travel is 1)architectrure 2)people/culture 3)environment

I have a Kata bag, http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=288&cid=67&perentId=1&ProdLine=1

Canon 5D, 16-35zoom Canon lense, 70-200zoom Canon lense, normal lense, gitzo trip pot with kirk ball head, 5gb of memory card (2-2-1), charger, polarizer, flash.

1) I need advice on how to store photos on the road since I take a lot of pics and in raw.
2) How do you pack- where do you put your tripod for flying
3) Do you bring small camera bag for hiking or walking?
4) security for gear in hotel rooms, rental cars, etc..

5) Any other advice or suggestions that will make my life easier to take pics, protect them and not be a nuissance to my travelling partners and going from place to place

You may need a power converter and surge protector.

1.) Not enough memory. I'm an amateur and I bring 15GB (3 4GB, 1 2GB, a few 1GB).

2.) Tripods are a big pain in travel. You have to trade off the advantage of a tripod over the weight, attention gathering, and general hassle. Are you willing to walk 8 hours a day w/a tripod? How about a bean bag, table pod, clamp pod, anything except a tripod. You might miss a few shots w/o the tripod, but by moving faster you can take 100's more!

When I go to Hong Kong I usually buy a tripod . . and it sits on the hotel room all day. I leave a 9AM in the morning, get back at 10 PM - I"m not carrying it all day!

3.) A fanny pack will work well with your back pack. One can fit a single dSLR + lens + batteries in a fanny pack, swing it around open it, take a few pictures, and put it back. Makes for an easy day when you get tired of that back pack, or when you just want to go out to dinner and relax but still carry something.

4.) You have to back up your pictures somehow. Now that my wife brings her labtop computer it's not much of a problem for me, before that I had one of those mini harddrive devices that can copy everything. A portable DVD burner is another option.

5.) I'd carry at least 3 batteries known to be good, maybe more if power is uncertain.

So what type of device do you recommend to upload the photos?
-good battery life, fast, reliable, not over 500.00

What type of bag system. I need a system to carry my camera gear hiking and a day pack (for water, food, jacket, books, personal items) rest of my gear is carried by a mule

Mine is 3 year old, wouldn't want to saddle you with that, ask in the storage media forum.

3 weeks in Asia is about 5000 pictures for me . . .

I take a laptop computer. It is great to be able to process the raw images atthe end of the day. I also use an outboard HD device for additional storage.

2) How do you pack- where do you put your tripod for flying
I take a small travel tripod, not my big one. I do not use it unless planning on doing night shots. Take a look at the Cullmann Magic II. It is small and very compact, yet reasonably sturdy.
3) Do you bring small camera bag for hiking or walking?
Yes, I use a lowepro topload zoom. It will hold the camera and the attached lens, but not an additional lens.
4) security for gear in hotel rooms, rental cars, etc..
Out of sight. When I go out, I lock all gear inside my suitcase.
5) Any other advice or suggestions that will make my life easier to
take pics, protect them and not be a nuissance to my travelling
partners and going from place to place
Extra batteries, of course and plenty of memory cards (enough for a day's shooting.
