Take a look at this view out of my aviary.

And here's a view taken outside shortly afterwards. Notice how nonchalant he's being -- pretending I'm not there (although the only reason he's on the wire and not the aviary is because I came out).

I had just lain down to take a nap when I heard the birds making a bunch of noise. I got up in time to see a pair of talons make a lunge at the aviary wall. I'm not sure what the hawk thought of accomplishing by that manouvre.

This guy has visited several times before and has also left deposits on the roof. Can you hawk experts out there make a positive ID?

It looks like one of the Acipiters (Coopers' or Sharp-shinned). Based on the size relative to the wires, I would guess it it the Sharp-Shinned, which is smaller (19-12").

Your series reminded me of a Sharp Shinned hawk that got into our chicken coup one time. There was a tree growing through the middle which created a little gap in the top chicken wire covering - and he managed to get in through there. But unfortunately for him we had about 5 mature very large and very angry roosters . . . we found that little hawk dangling upside down clinging to the top while those roosters were taking turns making a run and smacking into him as hard as they could. lol. We resuced the little hawk but he didn't seem very appreciative as he certainly attacked the hand that rescued him!

Your hawk is wondering . . . now where is the door to this buffet???

We have one of these, although considerably smaller - probably a Sparrow Hawk - that frequents our backyard. We feed all the neighborhood birds, sparrows mostly, and the hawks love to come down, perch on our privacy fence, and hunt for a meal. Usually, the sparrows hide in the honeysuckle that grows over one side of our fencing. I've seen these hawks dive-bomb the honeysuckle trying to get at the sparrows. I've also seen a few hawks with a morsel or two of feathers flying away in triumph. Great images here!

Heheheheh :) I say bad intentions are on the mind of that hawk. Nice catch. It was funny to see this shot and the one above showing the tip of its tail feathers through the glass of the aviary.

I know you mean well but please do not embed my images into the forum. Thanks for respecting that.

Yep. I think you have that right.

Your chicken story reminds me of when I was 6 years old. My dad had bought what were supposed to be 100 hen chicks. Well, we had about 106 chickens in all, and about 5 or 6 of them turned out to be roosters (I guess the place we got them from had a good idea of their accuracy). We ate all but 2 of the roosters, who remained to perform some important duties.

One of them was a very small rooster, smaller than any of the hens. The other was large, tall, and very defensive. Whenever I'd go into the chicken coop to collect some eggs, he'd attack me until I dropped the eggs.

So we ate him, too.

The little one was just adorable and didn't mind us at all. I don't recall what eventually happened to him. Probably a possum ate him.

Something eating them seems to be the eventual fate of most chickens, I've found out....

There's no glass -- just 1/2 inch hardware cloth. You don't see it in front of the hawk because of the shallow depth of field of the lens.

Perhaps he's lonely and looking for some friends. I think I saw that once in a Disney film.
