Hi Everyone,

I'm about to order some books from Amazon and one of the books I'd like to get is a tutorial for Photoshop. The one I'm looking at buying is the Photoshop Wow! book. Does anyone have any opinions about this book? Is there a book you feel is better (more in-depth, comprehensive, better examples, method of teaching)? Or, do you think I could learn enough just by reading the online tutorials at sites like phong and eyeball?

I've read most of the reviews for the book on Amazon but I'd like to hear the opinions of the photographers on this forum. My goal is to learn how to use Photoshop effectively both for digital photography post-processing and for website design. Thanks for your help! :-)--Tome

Tome,

I would say that getting a book is a good idea. I never have the time or patience to read these books. I find alot of tips on the web. You can also get a bunch of tips from the "Retouching forum".

Tome17,

I have the WOW book and it is very good. Another outstanding book is the Classroom in a Book, PhotoShop 6.0 by none other than the folks at Adobe! Both books do a good job, but I really liked the "tutorial" approach in the Adobe book....just suited my learning style. A third book I can recommend is PhotoShop 6 Artistry by Haynes. Don't buy this one first....it is a tough read....but it really is THE definitive book on PhotoShop, with emphasis on digital images. My recommended order.....Adobe first, WoW second, Artistry third. (By the way, I read WoW and Adobe from cover to cover....still struggling with Artistry.)

Happy reading and learning!

Thanks for the advice. I'd like to get away with buying just one book if possible. As Wow! seems to be a good middle-ground, it might be the one for me. Any idea if the 6.0 Wow! book would be good if you have Photoshop 5.5? (There's a possibility I'll get 6.0 later...)

Tome:

Try and find "Photoshop 6 for Window's Bible", it has to be the most
comprehensive Photoshop manual available, and will tell you "everything
you'll need to know but were afraid to ask" about Photoshop.

And many of it's teaching's will apply to PS 5.5 as well.

Only thing is, it's a rather extensive edition and cover's all aspect's of
Photoshop, such as webdesign, webgraphics and such, which if this doen't
interest you, it may be a little bit of "overkill".

I'm still trying to get through the whole book and I've had it for a few
month's now.

But if you want a "complete" Photoshop "manual", this would be the one!

Thanks for your suggestions! I ordered the Wow book for 5.5, since I'm not sure when or if I will be getting PS 6.0. I figured with all the great reviews, the Wow book would be a good place for me to start. If and when I want to go further, I will look into some of these other great books!
