I am getting a 420EX to go with my G1 soon. What are the best types of batteries to get for it? I know I want rechargables, but which is better, NiCad or MIMH?

I am concerned about recycling time, but more importantly the number of flashes before a recharge. Also, which battery will hold its charge longer if it is fully charged and stored outside the camera?

Thanks,

Chris

I'm not trying to talk you out of rechargables, but I've found the 420EX is frugal enough that I don' bother with them. Plain alkalines give hundreds of flashes and it's one less charger I have to carry around.

Anyway, as to your question I believe NiCad has the fastest recycle time (bet. alkaline, NiCad, and NiMH) but the shortest life.

Yeah, what he said!!

Aren't there also LITHIUM rechargables these days, and if so, how do they stack up? I've spent ENOUGH on my stuff recently, so affordability is a concern too!!

I can recommend NiMh batteries. I use them myselv on my
420EX. On newly recharged batteries the recycle time is
less than 5 sec. if you fire at full strength. Usually much
less recycle time as it seldoms fire at full strength.

I did not count number of flashes before I had to recharge,
but it was between 300 to 500. I have 1700mAh batteries.

I tried alkaline batteries first. I experienced much longer
recycle times, so I have not regretted investing in NiMh
batteries. Besides, they can be recharged 1000 times.

Do MIMH batteries self discharge more than alkaline or nicad when stored out of the flash? I was thinking of getting 2 sets so that I would always have one fully charged.

Thanks,

Chris

I think NiMH discharge the quickest. But don't have any memory effect like NiCd. NiMH are also heavier than either. They also have rechargeable alkalines that can be recharged 100 times I think.

Roger, the keyphrase is not "1000 times", it's "up to 1000 times". More often than not, you don't get as many recharge cycles as the advertised "up to 1000 times".

All rechargeable batteries lose their charge over time, and not much can be done about it. I read some very bad things about NiCads, especially regarding the memory effect. I still have two of these in AAA form, and a dumb charger for that.

Now, are Maha 1600mah AAs good, or should I get the 1700mah's? Thanks for the advice though, I'll keep a non-rechargeable lithium/alkaline set and save myself the cost of a 4-pack.--Printer Boy http://www.printerboyweb.net/ (warning: offensive material inside)

I know, but I think these NiMh batteries will have saved me money
after 15 to 20 recharges compared to alkalines. I guess I will notice
when they don't last that long after a recharge, and if it's before
the promised 1000 times I will not be sorry.

Yes, stay away from NiCd batteries. The NiMh batteries don't have
that bad memory effect as NiCd batteries. Nevertheless, I always
nearly empties the batteries before I recharge.

The 1600mAh batteries are not that different from the 1700mAh.
They just lasts a little shorter before you have to recharge.
Check price difference before you decide.

Hi!

Somebody wrote earlier, that 420 feels a little heavy on the G2.

I agree and i have found a solution. I bought in my market four AA-sized lithium batteries (non-rechargeable). With normal batteries 420 weighs 400 grams and with lithiums 360 g. 10% less and feeling is much better.

Lithiums cost some more, but i have noticed the electricity costs always about the same in the batteries. Cheap ones exhaust earlier and more expensive keep drumming...
