they're installing new radars (speedmeter) in the area, and I looked at the manufacturer specs, and it has built-in 2 D70s that take the picture of the vehicule from front and behind (to be sure to not miss you.. b*stards..)

here's a link to the PDF if you're interested:

IS THERE ANY FLAW IN THE D70s that I can exploit ? like color filter on the license plate etc? LOL

this is an unusual topic, but it's such an unsual use for a D70s, that i wanted to share it with you ;)

That is the first thing I thought as well, too easy of a target.

Looking at the PDF it seems the box has not one but TWO D70s's! It would not take much time to drive around and map all the locations of the boxes and on one night visit each one wearing a ski mask, hit the box with a sledge hammer and wammo you have 2 D70s's with the kit 18-70 for each stop.

I wonder how they stand up to the heat generated inside the box, with the sun beating down on them is like putting your DSLR in an oven.

Nikon digital cameras have been used in most fixed speed or red light cameras for years.

The body is a D70 or D70s but they have special lenses and a card in the Cf slot that directly connects back to a centralised computer system.
How do I know?

I supply products to one of the world leaders in speed detection technology and I reqularly see the cameras being installed in their factory.

Yes, if you can a huge infrared l light on top of your car, it will fool the D70 meter and ruin the image. Same technology they use to try to prevent people from filming movies in the movie theater can work to prevent you from getting a ticket.

LOL!!!!

What a huge waste. They don't even remove the LCD protectors before subjecting the units to a (presumably short) lifetime of wildly varying temperatures and humidities. The poor b@stards. The lenses don't look nikkor-ish tho.

And are those SB-800 units! I keep hearing about how F* KING BRIGHT speed cameras are, but SB-800s?

I pay enough taxes already :P and don't want cops to buy more of those based on the fact they'll make more money with such installation :P

a general reply:

if you read the specs, the box holding the 2 D70s are made strong, double metal layer etc... + they're certified to work between 0-40°c. so that means in winter and hot summer they don't work? :D I don't know frankly.. and I don't want to test :P

for the ones that are thinking of stealing one, you'll know that have have put cameras on the side of the highway to watch any kind of depredation commited to these boxes.. ;) they're not crazy eh hehe

but they're moving the D70 from time to time, because they can't afford to have them in every boxes they installed on the highway

about the flash, as you can see in the specs it's REALLY bright, I wonder if it's an SB-800, any user of 800's could tell us?

Terrifying. I feel for them. Near zero maintenance, stuck in a metal box all day, and a most despised job.
