I am a new owner and have read many references to a problem with manual focus and apparently a repair that Olympus will make. What sort of problems have been occuring, what should I be aware of? Thanx

Ernie,

Sorry, I realized after I sent the last message that most of that thread was about auto focusing problems. However, there have been numerous other threads about just manual focus problems. It may be worth your while to do a search on manual focus.

Lawrence, Thank you for your reply. Yes i did check out suggested site and have searched under "manual focus". At this time I am not faced with a problem, but have read many messages about getting firmware upgraded and that Olympus will do it for free when camera is sent in for repair of "maual focus" problem. I am just trying to find out what that problem is so I can be aware and watch for it Ernie

Ernie,

I just tried something with my E-10. I layed a yard-stick in an almost horizontal position. I then set up my E-10 on a tripod. I zoomed in to, and focused on the 18" mark. I then zoomed back so I could get the whole yard-stick in the photo. I took a photo while I was zoomed in and again when I was zoomed out.

The zoomed in photo was perfectly focused on the 18" mark. In the zoomed out photo, the 18" mark was fuzzy and the facal point was much closer to the camera (3 1/2" was the closest point in the photo and it looked in focus, and the focus got worse further away from the camera). I took the zoomed out photo into Photoshop where I could increase the size so I coould see the 18" mark clearly.

This sounds like a problem to me, but I would like to hear from some of the experts. I would like to know if zooming should change the focal point. Based on the above, should the camera go back for repair?

Yes, it will change completely. In AF mode, if you do that, you hear the AF motor adjusting as you zoom. MF mode stays put so of course it will no longer be focused.--- Dr. G.E-10 FAQ: http://www.tokenasians.com/articles/e10faq.html

Dr. Gonzo,

I guess I was trying to put together the suggesting of zooming in to focus in auto focus, then zoom out to take the photo with my test for manual focus.

Without any thought on my part, I was trying to do the same thing in manual focus because I could not clearly see the 18" mark without zooming in on it.
