How do you pronounce "*ist" ?

Sorry, but I don't live in the US.
Sorry for sounding so uneducated, but is that i. s. t. or simply
"ist"??

Hi,

Since 'Splat' is an alternate name for the ' ' character used for many decades. The term derives from the old days of teletypes, where the character looked just like the remains of a bug that had been swatted while sitting on the paper - a 'Splat'.

Pentax stated in their announcement press release that the 'Splat' is intended to mean whatever you'd like it to mean. So, I choose to call it by the old name of the wildcard character. :)

I hope that the delay in product availability does not result in the product going 'Splat', though. I think Pentax has something that fits a part of the photo market that has been ignored up until now (with the -ist pair of SLRs).

The 'amateur' keeps trying until it's right. The 'professional' keeps trying so it's never wrong.

Oh, I could get started on this one.

Back when the film *ist was being reviewed by Popular Photography, the staff took to calling it the starkist. I always liked that one.

"Dumb'ist" name given to a product line!!

Even though I think it's the "Smart'ist" camera platform made (-: with it's lens compatibility.

But not the "Fast'ist"
But it was the "small'ist"
and the "light'ist"
when it came out.

that's all I have

You know I have always pronounced it as ist... but now that I think about it, when ppl ask me about what camera(s) I use, I always say Pentax-ist DS. So maybe the camera name should just be "Pentaxist" D/S/L/S2/L2

That's how I say it... I treat the * as a silent character, and pronounce each letter seperately.

For instance: I - S - T - DL
I - S - T - DS/DS2

etc.

I hate the way ist sounds as a word, regardless of the prefix.

1- swallow a moth
2- attempt to get it out of your throat

The sound you make is the proper pronunciation of *ist.

I have always ignored the " " and just say either Pentax DS or Pentax i.s.t D.S....most do not even know that there IS and asterisk, and those that do know probably ignore it...

You have to appreciate that I teach marketing at a post-secondary level. The *istD pronunciation defys all principles of good marketing. Whoever drummed up the *ist should be fired, quartered, and unequivocally. Utter garbage. No wonder this company lags behind the big 2 with marketing gurus who come up with this stuff. To answer you question: It is pronounced D, DS, DL, K10D, etc. There is no such sound or thing as the . Cheers. Don

I normally think of my camera as a Pentax DL, or as needed, more specifically a Pentax 'ist' DL. I don't even try to pronounce the asterisk...

But a few weeks ago, my sister and her fiance were heading out to buy a flash for me to use as their official wedding photographer (and yes, it's my first wedding shoot.. yikes!), and I knew they would need the specific name of my camera in order to get the right module and flash ( I had them buy the Promaster 5750dx). I then had to explain to her how I actually pronounced it vs what it actually says on the camera body.. '*ist DL... that's a star, as in an asterisk, but I don't really pronounce that part, but they might at the camera store..and then after that, it's just DL...'

Needless to say, I agree.. it's a horrible name for a camera model!

I remember hearing from my local Pentax rep that the * really was a wildcard character, meant to symbolize the many roles- special'ist', real'ist', etc.
