The 2 ring w/collar version. The lens look absolutely perfect. Not as much as a scratch anywhere, and it seam to function perfectly. It came complete with caps, hood and a nice solid case.

Of course it's totally dark outside, so I have to wait until tomorrow to take it outside for some testshots.
I'm a happy lad ;-)

1. Much, much more affordable - a good used 80-200 ED is typically between 20% and 50% of the price of a 70-200VR

2. Excellent optics (as good as the 70-200) and if you don't need or want VR (some don't), and same constant 2.8.

3. Handling very good

4. A "pure", simple lens

5. Built like a military weapon.

Regards

Ewen

Personally I could do most of my telephoto off of a tripod with just the 2.8 apeture. I like AFS but could live without it along with VR for the substantial cost savings.

The 70-200 VR is way beyond the limit of my budget currently. And I believe this lens will cover my needs more or less just as good.
I paid US$ 820 used here in Norway (new would be about US$ 2000!!!).

I agree with all of the other posters. I'm actually considering the 80-200 as well and I see that KEH has one of the AF-S version for just under $1000. If it's still there in a couple of weeks or if they still have one like that I may splurge and get it or just get a regular 80-200 2 ring for around 600-800 used. I personally don't think I will need the VR as much as I just need the fast 2.8 lens. I shoot most telephoto during the day or in brightly lit arenas anyway.

I'm curious -why would someone want this lens vs. the 70-200 VR????
Aperture ring for compatiblilty with entire Nikon SLR line
No electrics/electronics to go wrong (AF-S and VR)
Smaller and lighter, very important to some
Better tripod foot
Almost the same optical quality
Half the price

I consider this lens as well. I't mainly use it at concerts where I'd need a feast enough shutter speed anyway. it might also be lighter and a little bit more compact (not sure though).

but the jury is still out :)

Congrats,

I've had mine since april and I really love it. Very easy handling and great, great IQ. Only downside is the weight, but it's not a big issue.

Happy shooting! :-)

...and shot an air show last weekend...not one shot was OOF....all hand held.....gorgeous shots. You will love the lens.

Well, I had the lens out for it's first shooting (in my hands). I'm downloading the pics at this very moment and I'm very anxious about the results. Since this is me, the first pictures of course have to be low light/night shots...LOL
Hopefully tomorrow I'll manage to get out to shoot while it's still daylight.
