Girl with Rose - Smudge

Just wondering if you have ever had any of your smudges printed
onto canvas?
Thanks for the comment in your previous post, Nicole. Not yet. I’ve been doing some research on Giclee printers. The best ones can be very expensive, so I’ve been slow to move on this.

Thank you. As JD said, it does help to have a lovely subject. This little girl displays a wonderful spirit, and I think you did a great job of capturing it. I know photographing children at that age can be a challenge, so I applaud you for that!

Thanks to everyone for your encouraging feedback. If anyone has any questions about my technique with this, I’ll be happy share whatever I can. Just a few notes:

1. I used only two smudge brushes on this – Sarsa’s hair brush for hair and adding stronger brush strokes here and there throughout, and the rough round bristle brush everywhere else.

2. The background was first smudged, then I used the art history brush (oil sketch preset) to give it the look I was going for. I’ve been looking at the work of Fay Sirkis (look her up – she’s great) and was trying to sort of pattern the background after hers.

3. I used two PS filters – paint daubs and anisotropic diffusion – as well as Trimoon’s canvas texture.

3. As a starting point for the bench she’s sitting on, I used a texture from this website:
http://www.mayang.com/textures/index.htm

4. The rose was taken from a bouquet and photographed in my back yard.

Thanks again,
Scott

Beautiful work as always Scott. I am awed by the talent I find on this forum. Could you give a bit more detail on how you achieved this look here for us newbies? Also I cannot find Trimoon's canvas texture, Sarsa’s hair brush, rough round bristle brush (are these standard Photoshop brushes, if not where can they be found?)

Thanks so much,

Bruce

Thanks, Cusin Brucie!

Here’s a workflow that I wrote that’s very similar to what I did here:

I’ve also written a couple smudging tutorials that may help:

Trimoon’s canvas, as well as a lot of other goodies, can be downloaded here:
http://www.trimoon.com/html/downloads.html

And Sarsa’s hair brushes can be downloaded here (I always use the one that opens at 15 px.):

Hope this helps,

Thanks so very much Scott, this really helps very much. I have a Grandson that turns one this month and I want to start playing around with this technique for some of his pictures. I really appreciate it so very much.

Do you want to play with this piicture? Actually it may not work as he takes up most of the frame.

Thanks again

Wow. Great work from a small file to start with.
I downloaded your canvas texture and can't get the results you
have. What are your steps to apply the canvas texture like you
have done on these smudge paintings?
Thanks, Christine! My application of the texture is fairly basic I
think. I pretty much eyeball it as I adjust the scaling and relief
sliders. If memory serves, I think I used settings of 118/4 for
the large file and 90/4 for the smaller one. One thing I always do
is to apply a bit of sharpening to the entire image after applying
the texture. And of course I’m always careful to save the
pre-texture version for future editing and printing.
One other thing I forgot to mention is that after applying the canvas texture to the full-size I used a small history brush to remove some of the bigger texture bumps from her face and hands. On the small image I reduced the texture evenly over all of her skin areas.

Too Amazing for words !! I am in total awe of your talent. I've tried smudging several times and ummm let's just say "UGH" describes it best LOL.

Absolutely FANTASTIC! I've said it before, your work truly makes me happy :)

Scott, you've done it again. Wonderful work.

I'm becoming quite addicted to this smudge painting. Thanks to you, I'm slowly getting better...to the point where people are asking me to do their photos for them! Thanks!

I like how you've blended the photo/painting into a blank white area on the edges.

Great work.

Thanks, Paul! Glad to see you've caught the bug. Love to see some of your work. As to the edges - like I said in an earlier post - I was trying to sort of mimic the painterly look of Fay Sirkis' backgrounds.

How necessary to the smudge techinque is having a tablet... I'm interested in the Intuos 4X6 but really don't know if I want to shell out the money for yet another electronic toy that may go seldom used... however, the thought of being able to someday achieve results like yours is tempting...

Thanks in advance.
