Sorry Dave, but now you are going to far;

I know that it is not out of charity that you put your time in writing software, but when you ask before to test your routine, then it is in the understanding that you supply those early testers with a corrected version also for free (offcourse, further updates should not be for free, but that you can state on beforehand);

Besides that, for people outsite the US, it is quite impossible to pay an amount of $10 (I don't see a possibility, unless with a credit card);

About the quality of the filter : the beta version gave good results, but it was a pain to try different levels, or to switch the preview window : every movement resulted in again computing the whole thing, and took many, many minutes (on a high-end PC : 1.8GHz - 750MB Ram); I liked the most the biggest noise-reduction factor (and should it be possible, even some more);

You have done a terrific job, and I hope that you have solved the performance issue: in this case, the product has a future...

Hello again,

As promised, the new and much improved version is now online. I
need to recoup some bandwidth expenses, so I'm only offering this
new version as a demo for free. It can be downloaded from here:

http://www.glickcreative.com/downloads/gc_ir_demo.8bf

If you like it, it's only ten bucks for the non demo version.

Again, please let me know what everyone thinks!

Let me address some of these comments...
Sorry Dave, but now you are going to far;
I know that it is not out of charity that you put your time in
writing software, but when you ask before to test your routine,
then it is in the understanding that you supply those early testers
with a corrected version also for free (offcourse, further updates
should not be for free, but that you can state on beforehand);
Besides that, for people outsite the US, it is quite impossible to

There seems to be a great deal of "distaste" over suddenly charging for the real filter. Let me explain why I had to do that here for everyone...there are actually a couple reasons.

Firstly, I have to pay for bandwidth (like everyone else running a website). DPReview has many readers and so mentioning that I have a new filter causes a lot of traffic. I can do this a few times (Ie, I offered my Infrared filter for free, I offer two other filters for free on a permanent basis, and I offered this filter for free the first time around). I write these mostly for myself, and also because I see a need - I wouldn't put 50+ hours into these things if I didn't enjoy it. Believe me, I would love to offer them all for free to everyone here for the start to build some momentum, but I would actually lose money. I owe my hosting company if I exceed my bandwidth usage so I have to recoup expenses somehow.

Secondly, I do feel that I should make a small something off of these. As I said earlier, I do enjoy it a great deal, but I have indeed spent 50+ hours on this. I tried to price it low enough that it wouldn't be a big deal (Fred Miranda sells his noise reduction kit for $30 - mine is $10 to work on all noise levels). I'm not sure why that amount is a problem for out of country folks, either...not trying to be difficult, I really don't get it - please explain?

Thirdly, in response to the beta testing issue... I didn't mean to ruffle the feathers of those who helped with the earlier version. I do understand and completly agree that those folks should have the new version as well. I simply hadn't thought that far ahead. I'll be contacting everyone who helped out by contributing comments on here with download instructions for the new version.
About the quality of the filter : the beta version gave good

I'm working on a way to fix this - and do realize it's a problem. There is a short term fix, though. When you change a setting, hitting the escape key stops the preview window from continuing the update. Also, it seemed to me that there was a desire to have better reduction with more time. Thus, the new version does take a little longer.
You have done a terrific job, and I hope that you have solved the
performance issue: in this case, the product has a future...
Thank you!

What makes the demo filter a demo? Is it timebombed or does it not allow you to apply, only previewing? Before downloading any demo, I like to know what I'm getting.

Thanks Dave,

George,

Please see my post here:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1006&message=2048922

for more info. As far as the beta testing goes, I've sent everyone who contributed instructions on how to download the filter for free. As far as the money goes, I'm not sure what else to do - if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears! I'd love to be able to accept money from over seas (and I'm not sure why I can't - there's no reason that I can think of why someone who didn't want to use their card couldn't use a personal check...).

Hi Dave,

I have used denoiser filter beta verision in testing my trick to softener skin tone on people portrait and it works great . I applied denoiser on portrait photo then use add noise from photoshop filter (about 1.55%) to the image in order to get grain back . that's my trick.

:~

it looked like a reasonably good method for eliminating noise.

Now it turns out to be a 'demo-text inserting filter'.........

oh and Dave, remember to read the posting rules...

"Commercial advertising - Commercial website linking or advertising is not allowed, if you wish to advertise on the site contact us. "

After waiting 2 minutes on a P 4 1.8 Ghz machine for the demo to run, I find the red "Demo" stuff covers so much that it kooks like banding and I can"t see if the filter works or not. Guess I'll have to keep looking.

I have compared this method against Larry Lueck's latest noise filter (PS6 action) and actually think that the action is superior

Dave,

the point I wanted to make is like Georges mentioned : one should make the remark that the final version will be not for free, at the moment the beta-version is announced; This way, people don't put there time in it if they don't have such a need for it, that they will pay for it; Offcourse , in that scenario, you would also receive less response, and the end-quality of the final version could be less...;

I'm sure you will not make this error anymore, and you have done corrective actions by emailing to the contributors of this threath; But still I believe that a lot of people that didn't respond, have put time in evaluating your beta version;

About the payment : a personal check (from Belgium to the US) cost at the end at least 3 times the amount that you ask, so I don't see this as a solution; But I see in your email that you work with Paypal : this is the solution that I'm was looking for, but wasn't aware that you worked with it;

About your adapted version : I will test it the coming days, and send you my remarks;
Thanks for putting your time in this,

Luc Minnebo

I just tried to download it and got a screen requiring a password.
Is it no longer available?

Luc,

You're very right - I didn't intend for this to happen at all. The last thing I wanted was to have people upset over this whole thing. After reflection I probably should have handled things much differently. You're right, it would have been best to let everyone know about the final version first (though, I had thought I'd be able to give the final away as well, initialy). Anyway, everone on here deserves this:

I'm sorry

and with that said, I think the next filter I'm working on we'll go back to this free for DPReview users for several days system I used with the IR filter.

As for the money thing, I didn't realize it cost so much for overseas mailing - I do understand that many people either don't have or don't want to use a credit card. If anyone has suggestions on how to accept non-credit card payments from overseas or has done so them self, I'd love to hear them...

Jim -

I've increased the banding spacing by about 250% (9 pixels up to 30). Hopefully that should provide enough non-banded area for a fair evaluation. If it doesn't, just let me know and I'll bump it up again. I didn't intend for the banding to be intrusive - I just wanted a way for people to be able to fairy evaluate the filter.

Hello again,

After giving it some serious thought, I decided that all this trouble just wasn't worth it. I've gotten a very bad reception from many people on the board here (although some have been very supportive - thank you) and decided that I probably made a mistake. Please believe me when I say I'm not trying to make any big money from you folks on here - if I wanted to do that, I'd have to charge much more than ten dollars. As a show of good faith, the filter is now free to DPReview readers (at least for the near future). If you like it, all I ask is that you drop me line. For those of you who have already paid for it, I'm in the process of refunding your money back to your PayPal account. This might take a day or two, so bear with me. If you purchased it and don't recieve a PayPal deposit by Friday, please email me. Otherwise, enjoy!

Dave,

Thanks for all your hard work on this filter that benefits all of us. I hope this experience hasn't soured your desire to share your great work with us.

I was one of the folks who happily paid for the filter, being willing to support the extra cost of your bandwidth. And I received your refund even after telling you that you could keep my money.

You have an excellent reputation as far as I am concerned. I think your integrity has come through very strong, and I appreciate your willingness to reconsider your position and offer the filter for free.

I'm eagerly looking forward to any further work you do on the filter.
