I've noticed lately that if a person posts a picture for C&C some respondents take the original and modify it with their own version of post processing.

I guess I thought that was bad net form, but maybe I'm wrong here. I did it once and was soundly thrashed off line for doing it.

Do most people who post for C & C mind someone else taking the shot and changing it?

I think that would be acceptable if the poster ASKED for someone to see if they could improve it.

Personally it wouldn't bother me, as long as it was only posted here, but that's just me.

This is a hobby for me, it's business for others!

If someone really wants help, often the best way to help is by SHOWING what can be done in post processing.

If one is offended, then maybe they should stop posting images for critique.

Frankly, I like to see what someone can do to fix or change things. I have learned a lot this way.

C&C may be difficult, for some, to explain with words so image manipulation helps them to get their point across.

Let's see, I post an image for C&C and it gets manipulated by another, Okay!,no problemo, this is a phoyography forum and a great place to learn from others willing to share their view of a post.

The people who put name/copyright on their posted photos are the only ones it would be -obvious- to avoid. ;)

If the poster doesn't specifically state opposition to it, the only "safe" way to do it would be to ask the poster if they had any objection.

I do not sell my photos, so I am not worried about anyone doing anything with my photos.

Well... with the notable exception - in this day & age - of someone inserting my likeness into scenes that are -patently- offensive. :)

I apprieciate it! Some guy did it to me about a week ago, theronfamily I think it was, and was even so nice as to post screenshots of the curves he used, learned a lot from it and was grateful!

I too had some photos "Corrected" the other day and was VERY grateful. I had no idea the shots were even salvagable until I saw what they did.

Some see the cup half full...
Others see the cup half empty.

I see the cup through the viewfinder of my Nikon D70!

Theronfamily? You let HIM touch your photos???

I would find it acceptible for anyone to provide that information - my only exception is Theronfamily. I don't want him touching my photos! He ALWAYS makes the horizons CROOKED! Lol! ;-)

Seriously, like most other posters here, I would be flattered if someone took the time to play with a photo I post, either to help better my post processing skills, or in order to get some point across more easily. We don't really have a lot of time, so when compelled to help by downloading a photo, playing with it, and getting it posted again, I think it should be okay to do so. Otherwise, if you have to ask for permission, then it just impedes that process. Also, we're typically just posting 800x600 sized images, so it's not like someone is going to be able to steal it, adjust it, and sell it.

So, even though it might not be proper etiquette, my opinion is that it should be okay to do that. (and yes, it's okay even for Kevin to do it!).

Cheers,

Not at all. I consider it to be expected, and it predates the internet (at a level that permits easy "photo critiquing") by a couple of decades.

Whenever I've been on either the giving or receiving end of a critique, almost the first thing that happens is out comes a couple of sheets of paper on top of the image (or in front of the projector) for a discussion of different crops. Other elements of composition are discussed, because they had to be (couldn't tweak color balance of a print in the field back in 1976) but the crop could be shown by example, and a picture is worth 1000 words.

I see posting edits to be an extension of this. An explanation suddenly makes sense, when accompanied by a photo. I've been on both ends of this, and nary a complaint.

:-) I'd already done my horizon, just liked the way he did the curves.
I see! Kevin has gone from making people's horizions crooked to making them curved instead! Lol!

Fyi, the reason I joked about that is because when I first started posting into the Oly Talk forum, Kevin incessantly bugged me about my crooked horizons (until I finally started correcting them). I appreciated him being a pest back then. And I still appreciate him being a pest now! ;-)

I think it's ok, part of critisism, someone shows what they would or could do you a photo for them to like it. What YOU like may be totally different, but you asked for c&c ;-)

(and normally the rework isn't normally done on the original RAW)

I think over there, people may take exception ...
It's after all, their bread and caviar ;)

But in a place like this where we are amateurs (based on gear, not abilities) eek - flame coming on - the majority of threads I have seen have never once taken exception to mods.

Seems most here are keen to learn, not only about gear, but about comp and lighting and the whole thingamyjig.

If I have done this to you in the past, and you take offence, pls say so, then the record is set straight, and the rules are laid down :D

I'm a relative newcomer to both photography and retouching digital images. Addtionally I'm an amateur not a pro. Personally, if someone takes the time to physically show me how they would improve images that I posted for critique, I'd appreciate it.

Just my $.02

Trust me, I don't waste my time over there. I can't wade through the egos and bitterness............ duck and cover**

I'll just file my experience away as a one time occurrence.

It's nice to see a consensus here.

If you post for C&C then it seems you are requesting feedback on making the shot better if that is in the way of "I think it looks better like this and this is what it did" then all the better.

If it is a "My fist pic of my dog Spot aint he cute?" they are not asking for C&C and in that case I don't think it would be proper to correct the image,no matter how much it may need it ;-).
