Well here it is, one weeks worth of Infrared shooting with my B+W 093 IR filter and a x4ND filter. I've still got alot to learn, but I've been having fun while trying to soak up as much as possible here on STF.

Comments and advice welcome.

O.K i've looked at the pics and love the idea (pics are pretty good too!)

However i have no idea what the filters are for, and if the pictures were taken in daylight or night? i would realy love to give this method a go, so please can i have a clear explanation of how to do it.

James.

Yes, they were done in daylight with the nightshot mode on, a near black B+W 093 IR filter, x4 Neutral density filter and iso 100. Then the image levels and channels are tweaked in Photoshop and converted to greyscale.

Thanks for the compliment.

I am wondering what is the difference (in terms of results) of infrared and one that is taken in color and converted to B&W in, say, photoshop?

Is there lots of difference ??

Stars >

Shutter bug Magizine, Feb. 2002 has a detailed explanation of how this is done. On your web page you list a different IR filter than you list in this note Which one is correct. Is the camera in nightshot mode?

Great effects

Walter J.

I guess the best way I could describe the difference is that IR shots are more "dramatic". They tend to render clear skies as almost black, while leaving clouds fluffy white. Leaves and branches are white against dark skies, water can be black.

Black and white is much more subtle, and probably requires more skill to get great results. B&W has less contrast and renders values more realistically.

Infrared uses infrared light to see values totally differently from what we see with the naked eye, or colour film/digital, for example the white pine needles, black skies, white branches etc. This technique and its results are very satisfying, since I am new to this yet I can get results that I am quite happy with (for now).

Sorry about the confusion, both numbers are actually the same filter, it is a B+W #093 (87C) filter.

Yes the camera is in nightshot mode with ISO set to 100.

These are the best IR shots I've seen with an F707. What effect does the 4xND prodvide?

Thanks for the compliment.

The x4ND helps bring the tonal values down, the IR filter alone is a little too bright.

I'm not sure if everyone understands, that these shots required a $80 B+W IR filter, they can not be done with the Night-shot mode alone. It was an expensive filter, but well worth it in my opinion.

See ya.

Did you need to cover the IR light on the lens so it did not reflect back or is this not a problem? Also with the ND4 filter was it typically bright lightconditions , the choice of filter will depend on the sunlight conditions wont it?

Hi Walter,

Yes I did have to cover the emitters, I used a ring made out of a sheet of 1/8" thick closed cell foam, that I bought at a craft store, although cardboard could work too (more fibres on the lens though). I place this between the camera and the IR lens, then I put the x4ND on top of that. The lighting conditions were quite bright as you can see from the black skies. Others n this forum have used a x8ND with great success. I will just use my Circular Polarizer on top if I need to darken it some more, but I haven't had to yet. I am still new to this so there is alot to learn.
