purchased Sigma 17-70 2 days ago, trying to decide to keep or not. Please C&C. Thanks.

Thanks for the post, I just ordered the Sigma 17-70. Looks like I made a good choice.

Thanks, Austin

They look pretty good to me, the fourth picture seems a little harsh but that is probably due to the bright sunlight.

I am trying to select a replacement for my kit lens for my 350d. And would like to be able to make use of two zoom lenses, I have the Canon 70-300mm USM IS.

Since I need to keep the purchase below $500, Canon zoom lenses of quality are ruled out.

I’m kind of stuck between two lenses, a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or the Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 @ $389.00

The constant 2.8 on the Tamron sounds promising, but I will still have that 20mm gap between it and my 70-300mm IS.

The Sigma on the other hand covers the missing 20mm and while it does not have a constant f-stop, it is one full stop lower than the kit lens.

The thing that appeals to me me is the 17-70 range. I have the kit lens that came with the camera which is ok. I found the range worked well for me recently at a car show and that it suits my needs. I thought of staying with the Canon lens, but they were too expensive and Sigma beat out everything in their price range. I've done a lot of reading to the point of beating to death... so I finally made a decision for the Sigma.

Range is great, and built quality good. But it looks like big different between copies.
I'll try another copy tomorrow. Will post results here.

I returned my first copy - front focusing about 1,5". Second copy.... is even worst. Back focusing - 2,5".

Now my store have to order more copies - that means to wait 3 more week. SIGMA's QC is very bad;((

Wondering how common this is with Sigma 17-70. I just got mine last week, and tested it with a focus chart right away. It is tack sharp... right on the money. I couldn't be happier with its performance so far.

Got my 3rd copy - ..and it's GREAT!!! 1/4" back focusing not big deal. This one is a keeper!

It occurs when the plane of focus is in front or behind (back) of your subject.

Try shooting a ruler at a shallow angle. Then check to ensure whatever number you focused on is indeed in focus.
