How wide for full frame?

Just getting my SLR/c shipped to me next week and I'm curious before I shell out some cash for a wide angle to go on the FF...

How wide do most of ya'll go to take full advantage of FF? I.e. shooters with 5D, 1ds, slr/c? 24mm, 20mm, 17mm, 15mm?

I know it's a lens question and should probably be on the lens forum, but... I figured the FF guys would be here and could have a say.

The widest I've shot on cropped frame was 18mm- so more like 27 or 28mm real. I'm pretty sure I'll go at least 19mm or 17mm for the SLR/c, but could go with something like the sigma 15-30mm for that little bit of extra reach. Is 2-4 mm that big of a deal at the wide end?

Ideally I'd like to get a 17-40mm L, but being a college student not paid to shoot, I'm more likely to go with something cheaper and spend the extra on a macro lens or something. (Getting a really low price on the SLR/c was what landed me in FF territory... just in case you were wondering why I didn't just buy a 20d and good glass).

I primarily shoot with the 24-105 on my 5D but tomorrow I'm buying the 17-40 because I feel the need to get wider in my landscape work (er, hobby). I had an Oly E-1 with the 7-14mm for a time and that was the equivalent field of view of a 14-28mm on a ff. I rarely shot it as wide as 7mm though. Usually I was 10-14mm if I remember correctly.

Most times the 24-70 L is on the 5D for inside shots I do for my hobby. I have the 16-35 L and when I need to got wide, and that 8 mm makes a big difference. I try not to go below 18mm, but do many times. The bigger, brighter viewfinder is most welcome. Though I hear a lot of people say they miss the built-in flash; I always hated it on the 20D. Canon gave the 5D a nose job; the "nose" doesn't hang over the zoom or focus ring.

I sometimes take the 14L along when there's place in the bag. Don't use it a lot but it produces some interesting shots with superwide perspective. A bit of distorsion in the corners but the pictures are almost always picked first. A creative lens, not really my style but perhaps I just need more practice with it.

I use them both frequently, but the 15mm fisheye more often than 17mm on the 17-40L.

On film my widest was 24mm. Then I got a 10D, meaning it became something like 38mm. So I got a 17-40. Now I use a 5D, meaning that 17-40 gets really wide. I'm still not sure whether I would have bought it directly for FF. A bit wider [like 20mm] yes.

I'm not saying the differences are not small: there is real difference between 15 and 17. It is more that it is not very often usefull to me.

The widest i've used in 35 mm was a 20 on my Contax RF. Didn't use it a great deal, mainly for static interiors. Shooting action with something that wide gets you easily caught with perspective distortion. The widest I have on my 5D now is the 24/1.4, a lovely lens, i actually use it a lot and rarely find a need for anything wider.

17-40L is a great lens for street and city shooting.

24-70 perfectly usable, but not if you want to get close or big.

I've used the 12-24 on the 5D but it is effectively a specialist lens now.
