ACTION PHOTOS that is (ok folks lets get our minds out of the gutter :> D)

I pulled into the driveway this evening and to my surprise and excitement I heard a couple dirtbikes roaring in the open field behind my house. I rushed into the house to get the camera and FINALLY, AFTER 3 1/2 WEEKS WITH MY NEW UZI I GET AN OPPORTUNITY TO TRY SOME ACTION SHOTS!!!

First, I wanted to try to capture the guys with the "blurry background sharp subject" type of shot....here it is: http://www.pbase.com/image/959495/original

Next I wanted to try to capture the guys with the "frozen in time with good depth of field" type of shot.....here it is: http://www.pbase.com/image/959498/large

This last one is just a shot that came out halfway decent..here it is:
http://www.pbase.com/image/959501/large

I have to restate that this is my first time trying to shoot action with the UZi. The zoom definitely came in handy and I shot these in Shutter Priority. Overall I think I took about 12 shots and I know my technique needs a lot of work, but I'm happier than a pig in slop with the results I obtained. I did some post editing but not too much (seems like the more I try to do the more I mess the pictures up....like having too much red in the third shot). Anyway, please feel free to critique my photos....I really need the help!

Hello,

The shot with the blurred background is awsome! how did you do it?

did you point the camera and fallowed the subject ? this must be really hard to do but the result is quite impressive!

...eventually for buying that Uzi...hehe!

Real nice action shots here Boogie man. The first pan shot is very
nice.
My wife told me that should looked at me through the window as I took the pictures and said to herself, "That boy is crazy...jumping up and down like a kid at Christmas time!" I really was excited :o) The guys on the bikes said they'd be back tomorrow.......I'll be there but with my C-3000 this time :O)

I'm pleased with the pan shot as well....I really didn't think it was going to come out as well as it did. Thanks Bob!

Thats exactly how I did it Daniella. First I put the shutter speed to what I thought would be a good setting, then I depressed the shutter release button half way down as I waited for the guy to come toward me. As he approached, I simply kept him in between the focus brackets as I looked through the viewfinder. Finally I just snapped the picture. Thats how I did it. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE HECK I WAS DOING... i was just trying to impress the kids as I played "mister photography man" :OD

Give it a try Daniella....if ya don't like the results, erase it, and try it a little differently.

"IS" on or "IS" off????
Rumor has it that "IS" can get confused on a pan....

I'm not sure Maybe something about not being able to compensate laterally as well as vertically at the same time????..I forgot...I read so much here & there that I end up losing more than I retain...LOL....I know Cannon makes for thier 35mm film teles a 1st generation "IS" for tripod use at ultra long distances & then a 2nd generation "IS" specifically for hand held panning...& at least one lens that has both...selected with the flick of a switch...Saw them on a birding show a few weeks ago...

It's also suggested in the manual to turn "IS" off when using a tripod & the remote cause the "IS" tries compensating for motion that isn't present therefore causing what it's made to prevent...Don't ask me to elaborate...I'm not completely sure I understand it completely....
