Here are a couple of landscapes from the other day - same subject but different approaches. I think I quite like them both although my quality control filter (aka my girlfriend) likes the first but hates the second one. What do you reckon? C&C appreciated as always:

D200 18-200 VR

D200 Nikon fisheye

I like the first one better too, don't dislike the second one though.. It's not as dramatic as the first one. The first seems to have one subject to focus on and everything else in the pic adds to it. In the second the large green tree, the dead tree and the wall kind of compete with each other for your interest.

I think I really would have liked the second one much more if I hadn't seen the first one, which is amazing. The second one seemed gimmicky having seen the first. LIKE. Nice shot.

I prefer the second one for the enclosing wide angle shot...

Can I ask where abouts in the UK these were shot ?
They were shot just on the outskirts of Edinburgh. The hills in the background are the Pentlands.

grid ref NT101628 facing southeast, if you want the precise location ;-)

prefer the first shot - very nice!
did you use HDR? how did you get such a wide dynamic range?
Thanks. It's not HDR - it was shot in early evening light so there wasn't much of a problem with range. I adjusted the WB a bit to remove the yellow from the clouds and then it was just levels and Thom Hogan's digital velvia action and a bit of sharpening.
