for less than a year S3 has been released now there comes the S4?? geez...the dgitial world is so hard to stay in front...

Really offputting.

Anyway I start to build on the idea an S4 is coming soon isince strangely S3 activity increased in the forums lately and this may be a harbinger. Sometimes there are such undertoned and unexpected correlations in life.

I currently have the Panasonic FZ7.

Reading reviews on the Canon S3 IS. Imaging Resources gushes about it throughout 90% of its review...

considering a trade to the Canon...

any comments?

Photokina is over, and the S3 hasn't even been out for a year. Replacement won't be announced until at least February.

come on people, it is not comming this year. I have seen the prices on the S3is jump up a few bucks recently. I bought mine on the 2nd @332, and now it's up to 339 @ beach camera. My speculation is that you will not be able to physicaly get on until Q2 07.

I bought my S3 last month at Best Buy for $359- I had been watching the prices fall (and sometimes go up) a couple months prior to my purchase. I'm so happy that the price dropped when I purchased! The reason it dropped was the Rebel xti had just came out... the Rebel also dropped in price by $100. If the price IS right... go for it!

You know what they say, if it seems to good to be true...

I can't find them on Reseller ratings, and the Trust e, BBB, and Verisign logos aren't links, and they should be. You should be able to link to those sites to verify that they support the site you are purchasing from. I would be wary of such a bargain.

The sellers that sponsor this site are all about $350-$400 for the S3, the S2 is selling for about $300 now. I can't imagine anyone being able to sell the S3 for $200. The 2 reviews are both from the same person and they were both added today, the site says the camera has been in their inventory since the end of July, but the reviews are just from today, and actually it's just one review. Waaaay to many red flags for me.

looks like there's fraud written all over! others here have already mentioned the reasons - the s2 is selling for around 300, why would s3 sell for 200? besides, the guy who has posted it seems to be one of the internal guys. lok at the message!

" I bought this camer from Bestspecialoffers and came new and sealed in original box .I recomand this site with trust .

Thank You , and i will shopp again."

he's mentioned the STORE, and that its come SEALED & NEW. also he RECOMMENDS the store, also while being polite he'd shop there AGAIN. cool, this is a perfecting message of a marketing chap for the firm.

there's no mention of the too good to be true price. every effort is made for it look like a normal message. deliberate errors in the copy. he mentions "trust" while nobody would write in such a way. it's all - too much of a giveaway!!! avoid this place like plague!!!

I sold my S3 because I didn't like the camera: electronic viewfinder is small, dark and slow, clumsy switching between LCD and viewfinder (can't use them both at the same time), pictures and specs are OK. Handling of these SLR-like camera's is not like a real SLR; not very useful for fast and easy photography.

So I bought instead the new Canon Powershot A710iS and I'm very happy with the camera: clear optical viewfinder, large 2,5" LCD, enough with 6x zoom, great pictures etc. All day camera for fast and easy photography.

I also have (for fun) an even smaller pocketcamera Panasonic DMC LS2 ($ 115! in Holland) and a Nikon D70 for all the other work.

Why don't you look for a Nikon D50 or Canon 350D; these are real SLR's and not much bigger as a S3!

I have the d50. Still far bigger and bulkier than the fZ7, the S3 is just a tad bigger than the fz7.

Just weighing my options.

In the end, I think I'll be satisfied with 4 cameras.
I havethe d50, the Fuji f30 is on its way,

I want something with a long zoom, IS, not as big as a dslr, that's where the Panasonic fz7 or Canon s3 came into play. I'm happy with the Panny, but if the Canon was so much user friends with the manual controls and access, would consider the swap.

And. I want a compat WA. After some of your suggestions, thinking of returning my Panny fx9 and getting the fx01.

I'm good after that.

Oh, just went on the Costco website, canon s3 is - sold out. Guess the decision was made for me. Keeping the FZ7, for now.

DDyoga -

1) I'd like to think this was not a factor, but it should be noted that the "gushing" (as I believe you put it) review of the S3 on the IR site came hot on the heels of Canon becoming the POTD sponsor there...I found the review somewhat 'over-the-top', but in fairness, I have no clue whether the review was influenced by Canon's sponsorship (but the, ah, "optics" are bad...?).

2) I must admit to not fully understanding this trade-up/multiple camera 'thang' that predominates many of these forums, but for what its worth, I'm not sure what advantage you would hope to obtain by swapping the FZ7 for the S3, unless movies are important to you or unless you find the S3 handles better (I didn't, but YMMV). I believe I'm correct in saying that, once you begin closely comparing, the feature set of the Canon is very close to that of the FZ7 (and the '7' has some features the Canon lacks).

I was in a playful mood and wanted to see what the deal was, so I "ordered" from the aforementioned site. They had a minimum order of $500. I thought, hey, at these prices, I'll save even more (right), so I "ordered" a Panasonic FZ-30 for $300 (ridiculously underpriced as well) to make the minimum order. Then I started to checkout.

Turns out, they only accept bank-to-bank money transfers (i.e. totally untraceable and unrecoverable). So I quickly got out of there.

As the folks above said, if it looks too good to be true, it usually is. Caveat emptor!

Ouch...
Please forgive this young grasshopper's ignorance... I mean well...

Nope, just weighing my options. Just a newbie in the world of manual controls, and very enthusiastic to learn them and put the knowledge into practical use...

Just assume that in my ignorance and despite reading up on reviews… I still don't have the understanding to make an informed decision, and may have overlooked important aspects about one or the other camera.

But I guess dumb luck worked for me and I have a very capable little camera in the FZ7.

I do appreciate your advice and comments. Until several days ago, I had given the “M” on the dial any thought until I read your posts and saw your amazing pictures…

Thank you.

Cole.

BTW - took a picture of what I thought was a beautiful clouds. When I downloaded it, I realized what I really had captured with the FZ7 - LOL

wow... yeah, good test. yeah, 'caveat emptor' indeed. i also had noticed those fairytale prices! they might as well give it for free! this really bugs me - i wonder how many would have lost their money on such deals ? is there a central blacklist - maybe official or unofficial other than reseller ratings ? since its fraud outright with some ruse or some guise. don't these guys deserve time in the coolers ?

The only "central clearing house" that I know of for Internet fraud is Reseller Ratings ( http://www.resellerratings.com ). Use it whenever possible.

These guys didn't show up in the Reseller Ratings database. They are probably offshore. Yeah, they're fraudulent and deserve some time in the Graybar Hotel, but if they are offshore they're impossible to prosecute.
