Here's a tip I leared that helps you rename all of your photo files at one. Browse to your photo files (on your card reader, camera, etc), hold down your CTRL key, then select all of the files you want to rename (remember to hold the CTRL key down). After you've highlighted all of your files you want to rename, right click on one of the highlighted files, select "Rename", and rename it "Christmans2001" or whatever you want. Hit enter, and all the highlighted files will take on the name you chose + a number (ie Christmas2001 (1), Christmans2001 (2), etc....).

Very handy for keeping things organized!

BTW- This tip should work on any type of file. Also, I discovered this trick in Windows XP. I haven't tried it on any other Windows version, but I'm thinking it should work.--'Insert clever remark here'

Here's a freeware program to also use.....

Apps for renaming files are remarkably small and provide complete control over the format of your filenames. For instance, I've been using a seven-digit code to ID my pictures. First two digits are the year, second two are the month, and last three are sequential for keeping photos in order. So pic 0112057 would be the 57th picture I saved from December 2001. Then I can follow the code with a description, such as "0112057 - Christmas Eve at Grandma's (Mom and Cathy).jpg". The renamer app makes it possible to format hundreds of photos anyway you want in a matter of minutes.

Here's the one I use:

Why install an app when you can do it in like three easy steps?

Didn't work on my 2000 machine....only the last file highlighted amongst the 4 changed & then the third after retrying....

No highlighting worked fine but the only name changed on the file i rightclicked on. The other 3 files just stayed highlighted with no name change...then the 3rd file was the one I rightclicked on after the lone 1st one was already done....proccess of elimination or manual domino theory....--'Happy Shootin' !!!UZ'P'Shooter http://www.pbase.com/rrawzz

Doug if you use the shift key instaed of ctrl you can click the
first and last in a sequence, that will then select all inbetween
....and if you use the shift and CTRL key together you can select multiple groups, and if you use the shift and end key you can select everything from a start point to the end and if you use the shift and home key you'll select everything from your starting point to the beginning and if you press CTRL and A you'll select everything and.....yep...there's a lot of em :)--'Insert clever remark here'

The tip about batch renaming works only in XP unfortunately. Its part of XP's enhanced image-handling design (it really does some neat stuff)

If you are using 98 or just about anything else, my personal favorite is SuperJpg... with it you can batch/rename/resize/convert(file type) send to new location/zip all at the same time... pretty spiffy especially for doing uploads to pbase or wherever,

Irfanview, the freeware image viewer, can perform similar chores.

Is there a program that will replace the blank spaces in 200 filenames with an underscore character?

For example, I want a file named "My first photo.jpg" to become "My_first_photo.jpg", and there are 200 files in one directory that need to be renamed, so I don't want to do it by hand.

Compupic Pro will do that, it will name them whatever you want it to and start the numbering at whatever is specified. You can also do batch resizing and a few others as well. It is also the best image viewer that I have found. Their website is http://www.photodex.com . You get a 30 day free trial to try the program out. Make sure it's the Pro version for the batch renaming feature.
