Does anyone on this board live in the Atlanta area. If so, any suggestions on good places to take pictures. (outdoor, parks, etc)

I just moved up here and am anxious to take advantage of the new possibilities for photos.

I guess a trip to the bookstore may be in order (not for photos - for books on the area).

Thanks,
Erik

Yes, I live in the ATL area. You may want to try Stone Mountain Park, Calloway Gardens, Zoo ATL, Fernbank Museum, Kennasaw Mountain Battlefield, there are plenty of places. If you like Antebellium Houses you could take a drive to Madison, GA about an hour away, they have lots of old houses that have been restored in there downtown area. These are just a sample of the fine places in the ATL area you could visit, there is plenty more.

I don't live in Atlanta but until a few months ago my son did. Atlanta is full of places to shoot photos downtown at the park or on the streets and all over the Buckhead area where my kid lived right behind the Lenox Mall. I even saw some parks, wooded areas and such in lots of places there. Going out one of the little roads toward Dunwoody, I just remember turning off Peachtree by a golf course, there were bunches of places. You shouldn't have to go far just to have something to shoot.

I don't live in the Atlanta area, but visited Red Top Mountain a couple times. We would meet family from NC and GA there for Thanksgiving. Always saw deer and sometimes other wildlife in the area. It's right off of I-75 (don't remember the exit number) a little North of Atlanta.

rddrury1 pretty much covered it. I would add the mountain areas up north are very nice, waterfalls and such. Which camera(s) do you have? Look forward to seeing some photos.
Where you here for the snow? If not, here's a sample:

If you like history there is plenty of it. Grant Park, someone mentioned Kennesaw, and within just an hour and a half is Chickamauga and Lookout Mt. in Chattanooga.

Plenty of sports action in Atlanta also. Thrashers and Hawks right now and the Braves soon.

I envy you. Atlanta is one of the most friendly cities in the country and is truely an affordable city.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

I just moved up here last weekend so I missed the snow by a couple days (whew). Still, it is too cold for me (moved from Orlando, FL).

I have a 2100UZ and am anxious to start using it in many of the places mentioned.

Thanks,
Erik

Hey,

I go to school in Atlanta. The other night I was at the Georgia Dome and right in Centinniel park is a fountain. It is like water shooting up from the ground. If you watch your timing you can make it in the center of the fountain. The fountain consist of concentric cirlces forming the Olympics symbol. At night the lights really make it a colorfull, site. I think a shot of that would look nice. I plan to take one as soon as I get my cam.

  • Atlanta Botanical Gardens, at Piedmont park. Excellent for plants, etc. (but not as impressive as the next suggestion):
  • Calloway Gardens, about 90 min down 85 and 185 near columbus, admission is ~$12-15 per person [used to be $15 per car load :( ] lots of outdoor plants, flowers, etc, plus a butterfly house, a semi-enclosed horticultural center (awesome collection of unusual plants and gorgeous flowers), very interesting chapel (bring your bikes), etc. Good golfing, too. Spring time is spectacular throughout.
  • Chattanooga (sp?) TN is also about 90 minutes away: aquarium, Rock city, Lookout mountain. Best to get there by the back roads because:
  • On your way there, stop at Howard Finsters "paradise gardens" in Summerville (i think), NW of Atlanta. The master of folk art. (He died several weeks ago).
  • Also on your way to chatanooga (after stopping in Summerville), Chimamaunga (sp?) Military Park, site of Civil Battle, and litered with hundreds of monuments erected to honor the different units from all of the states (north and south). Sobering.
Along with the other suggestions, you'll have plenty of activities to keep you snapping.

Have fun,

peTe

Erik H,

I'm in LaGrange, 60 miles south of you on I-85. Callaway Gardens is 15 minutes from my house...the gates open at 9:00AM. You can plan a spectacular day of photography here. Here is a link to 30 or so images I took last week from sun-up to noon at and around Callaway Gardens. http://www.pbase.com/sandman3/let_there_be_light

Also, if you are interested, I have two more galleries with butterfly pics at the same site. This place will give your macro skills a workout!

By the way, the other suggestions you have received are excellent too. Stone Mountain, Fernbank, Botanical Gardens (i've seen better), the zoo (get there early, the animals sleep all day!), North Georgia Mountains, hey I even like to shoot the Atlanta skyline...it is really a beautiful city.

Best of luck in your new location!

Jim
