20D owners - what would you want in your next camera?

Some of the same thing you want with a few other things...

1 - Spot Meter
2 - Anti-dust sensor cleaning
3 - Better dust protection
4 - 12 MP Full Frame Sensor
5 - Better RAW Buffer

Of course several of these features are available in the 30D.

Why do you need exact framing? The amount of resolution involved seems negligible. I'va actually been glad pf the extra room on several occasions.

spot
faster read/write time to card
bigger buffer

ability to connect to computer and upload a spelized profile on the camera that would set shooting settings like a auto mode but is more custome

like i could have the choice to download a underwater mode/night club/aquarium/museum/birds..ect

the custome part choices if it raises iso or lowers shutter speed based on the situation and can be exported as a txt and shared on forums like this

Interesting - thanks all for your input. In particular, I gained a lot from the posts by John Sheehy - thanks!

One thing I found interesting is the number of people saying that they only use the center AF point. I only exceptionally lock it myself. Also, several request for 5fps or longer RAW bursts, which have never been a limitation for me.

There is a subset of users here who are clearly ready to graduate to the multi-thousand $$$ bodies, ready to pay $3,500 - $4,000. I think my next camera will also be somewhere above $2,000, but not for the next couple of years - but who knows.

I found several items I had not considered that would be very useful:
  • ISO in viewfinder; should be cheap to develop or implement.
  • More cross-type AF sensors; I wonder how many shots are lost because of that.
  • Spot metering - good catch Skykisser.
Some new ideas:
  • Hairlines in the viewfinder separating the field of view in 3 columns and rows, to help composition.
  • Clipping warnings on the display for blacks.

Agree - spot metering is currently about the only thing I honestly miss - I still have a LOT of ways in which to improve before I can blame my equipment for a bad frame :-)

Of course, a bigger sensor AND a bigger viewfinder image would also be great.

Personally, I'd like, in order of importance:
1 - More AF points -- nope
2 - Anti dust sensor cleaning -- nope (see alter)
3 - Better water / dust protection -- nope
4 - Slightly better sensor
5 - Lower minimum ISO
I want ISO in the Viewfinder ALL THE FRIGGEN TIME!

Since I have only had to clean my camera 4 times in 2 years, the cleaning is not a big worry oir a deal breaker.

I do not need a bigger LCD (my eye cannot focus this close anyway without changing from distance to reading glasses--prebiopis -- I'm 54). But even as small as it is on the 20D, I can get a good enough read on it to dial in the expose to the right corrections.

I suspect that 10 MP is on the way--this will not be an enticement to me. 12 MP withough an advancement in dynamic range is pretty much wated on me.

I do not particularly want lower ISO, but I could use better noise performance at higher ISO

I would like to see a 3-color exposure metering system where the focus spots are analyzed in all three colors independently to compute the final exposure that automagically does expose to the right. And then a piece of exif information to correct for the expose to the right (also automagically)

I would like to see dynamic-range bracketing--where the camera takes 2 or 3 images of different exposures and uses DIGIC to create a 16-bit image of high dynamic range WHILE in RAW format.

I will enjoy the continuing advancement of EF-S lenses since I still don't see any forward pull into the FF arena.

I do not want IS in the camera--just another thing to brake--not a deal breaker, though.

Yes, I realize speling is a chalunge for sum of us...I am inkluded in that grup, so pleze foregiv me.

The Beauty of IR

1) If the 400D's sensor cleaning works as advertised, it's a must-have feature for me. I spend a lot of time outside with the camera in dusty and windy scenarios, and cleaning becomes a real problem.

2) A slightly larger body - the 20D is just a hair small on the right hand grip for my hands.
3) Built-in vertical grip - basically just integrate the BG-E2.

4) Somehow change the exposure compensation setting. I like it on the back wheel, but I often accidentally click the wheel when I don't mean to do so and throw my exposure off. I don't find the Off-On-Wheel button at the bottom to be effective, either, because it often gets bumped from On to On/Wheel.

More pixels is optional. If it can be done with the same level of noise, I'm all for it. If it can't, then leave it alone. My other request - RGB histograms - are already present in the 30D, so I can't really ask for that.

will i upgrade. And perhaps improve DR with canons version of sony in camera DR optimizer. The competition has them now its canon turn. The rest of the stuff like 8 -10mp , spot meter, dust reduction, are nice but hardly affects the way I shoot much.

Having the freedom of using any lens and shooting 2-3stops slower without increase noise. Or freedom to shoot in extreme contrast conditions without need to bracket. These are the only thing I am really missing right now.

Just match the top competitor's offering, although, I understand it is not easy. And the list here doesn't means D200 has it.

1. VF and the information that provided, including ISO;
2. More and better AF point ross-type sensor;
3. Capable to link AE to all AF points;
4. Wireless flash controller;
5. Fix shutter noise - I believe they will based on what I've heard about XTi;
6. Auto ISO;
7. Imporved AE accuracy;
8. Add a 2 sec selftimer as alternative to remote;
9. More programmable button;
10. Wireless remote;
11. Add eye control option back;
12. ISO 50 to reduce the need of ND filter;

PLUS everything you see in 400D/XTi will be in, if not better

To get real, I think Caonon may:
1. put ISO in VF finally - 80%
2. add Auto ISO/ISO priority - 60%
3. Make the beloved Direct-Print programmable - 50%

I understand if Canon put all these nice functions in, the cost will be higher. But so many Pros are using xxD bodies, and they should make a Pro level model.

5. Fix shutter noise - I believe they will based on what I've heard
about XTi;
I have a 10D, 20D, and XTi right next to me, just used them all. XTi makes less slap than the 20D, a softer "shtt" sound, and then a "shhhtt-t" sound at the end of the exposure. Nowhere near as quiet as the 10D, though.
