Hi all ...

Currently using the canon 10 - 22mm wide angle but would like to add to this.
I would like a good macro lens and standard prime lens.

I have heard and read that the Sigma 30mm f1.4 is an ideal option for the 400d as a standard lens suitable for portaits and general photography

and that the canon 60mm macro is good too.

Could you offer your opinions on these 2 lenses if you have or do use them already, also some example shots would be really appreciated.

thanks in advance.

Loads of ef-s 60 examples on flickr.
just search for ef-s 60

thanks ... that helps

really looking for recommendations of these lenses though from people who have or who are using them.

cheers

I am the happy owner of the EF-S 60mm and I have not seen a sharper lens anywhere ( not that I've been everywhere ) and the colors are just great - this is by far my best non-L lens and it is on par with quite a few L-lenses.

Fantastic for tack sharp macros and really great for portraits although it can be a bit too revealing, but a little softening in PS and nothing really beats it.

P.S: Please note that this is an opinion - nothing to start a flame war with respect to L / non-L lenses.

I would certainly agree given that the 400D has the same high-precision focus sensor as the 30D. I would suspect a high percentage of shots with the focus landed well enough to print big. The 30 is a fine lens, optically an L prime, but priced with most of the consumer-range Canon lenses. If the 35L is out of your budget, it is the no-brainer substitute.

I really enjoy my 30 1.4 especially shooting at f2. It can really blur the background. You say portraits, the 30 can do more of an environmental portrait or full body but it's not a good for headshoots. The 60 will be much better for headshoots and in my opinion portraits in general (except environmental).

thanks david ... that's of use.

I may invest in the 60 macro initially then and see how I get on with using that for headshots etc ... I can always get the 30mm sigma after that.

Hi

have them both and love them both. The 60mm is a great lens with fantastic image quality. i use it a lot for portraits, more than for macro in the end. A bit long for indoor pictures of the kids on a 1.6 crop camera.

the 30mm is great too, the control of depth of field is awesome. had to send it and my camera in for calibration on the second one i got before it would stop front focussing. It stays on my camera most of the time now.

I would definitely say get both if you can.

I own the 60mm and it is really good!

Someone mentioned flickr, here is the link:

I was looking at the Sigma 30mm too and tried it at photokina on my 350D - well, I got lots of misfocussed images ( 80% were off)... Not encouraging. Tested some Canon lenses at photokina too, e.g. the 24L and 28 f1.8, 85L and 135L - no such problems.

thanks goso ... that image is razor sharp.

I note your comments about focus on the 30mm ... will see what others say.

Thanks
