Poll: Would you miss the K10D pop-up flash

I definitely need it. What i don't like about the K10D is that it also uses the flash as an AF assist light. That's "too flashy".

The last time I used a "in-cam" flash w/a DSLR other than as a remote wireless controller w/my D200 (but I don't use that very much).

For the number of times I've needed a bit of flash and didn't have my AF360, I'm grateful for pop-ups. They're not as good as the AF360 - but if you're stuck, it's a great thing to have......and I've been stuck enough times that it's worth my while.

I don't use it all that much, maybe once every 250 - 500 shots, but as a daylight fill flash it can't be beat.

there are a few times I use the built-in flash as a 'fill' flash when I don't have my outboard flash available. I'd still like to have the older style PC flash connection available though instead of using the (expensive) Pentax adapters and cords.

Even though I have the Pentax 360 flash, which is infinitely superior, the pop-up is handy in situations where I'm not carrying a bag of accessories.

I've also started experimenting with using the pop-up as a trigger for off-camera use of the 360 (as a slave, in manual mode), and absent wireless in-camera capablilties, an optically triggered slave 360 seems to offer potential for some interesting effects. Unfortuately, a lot of fiddling with the settings is required.

I often travel without my vivitar flash gun, so as quick 'n dirty fill flash, the pop-up works well. I don't use it often, but it's nice to have when you don't have any other alternative.

Hi Jim,
I don't know how much it costs to manufacture but if it was not
there then I would think that it should be possible for Pentax to
improve other areas in order to aim the K10D directly at pro users
in terms of performance at almost the same price.
Like adding PTTL command to it. I'd rather the K10d cost
$100 or maybe even $200 more and have PTTL command
capability. As it is it may be that the flash doesn't get used
as any time I'll want flash I'll have the AF360 on it.
Don't get me wrong. I think Pentax did right aiming the K10D at
advanced users because no one expected the K10D to be offered at
such a competitive price and that leaves Pentax plenty of room to
launch a pro spec'ed K1D and still be competitive. (without
internal flash of course)
I think a K1D would be a truely flawed product if it didn't
have a PTTL command capability.

Originally I was planning is to replace my AF400T with a 540,
now I'll have to buy another PTTL flash to mount on the
camera. I had been hoping that the K10D would do commanding
so I could use a 360 and 540 together. Now it looks like I'll have to
have two 540s and a 360 acting the controller. I'd been happier
to not have to carry an extra flash.

As I don't need it right away I'll wait. If it had of had PTTL command
I probably would have bought it by now.

thanks

Yes, and then like other price conscious choices they made like P-TTL flash support and not also including TTL and uncompressed RAWs, etc. etc. etc. someone would complain about it.

While on camera flash isn't good for everything it does come in handy. I wouldn't buy a camera without one.

Having used other digital SLR's with built in flash, I found not very useful during real shooting (earning money), but very useful when taking quick shots of family. I really doubt it costs that much to add. So... I like having it.

Of course Nikon uses this to control external flashes. It's not a good system, but one of the better ones from a camera manufacturer. Honestly the first company to build a real radio TTL system with control similar to Quantums will have a lot of followers.

It would be fine with me if Pentax removed that RAW button and instead included an ISO button.

I understand that some people think the RAW button will be useful. That's fine, but I'll bet even more people would benefit from an ISO button.

A K10D without pop-up flash would probably hurt sale too much even if it was traded for a better performance and so Pentax did right implementing the internal flash. Thanks again for participating.

I find the Popup flash on my DS pretty handy and better than none.

When I travel compact and light, DS + 16-45 + 50-200, I appreciate the popup unit.

I would like it to rise higher and to tilt. Would be much better.

Cheers

Ah, now Sharpening.....as if exposure, lighting, colour, composition and focus weren't enough to worry about....the journey continues.

Hi Jim,

My DS having a pop-up flash is extremely useful to help trip the optical slaves on my 3rd-party flashes. If cameras did not have a pop-up, it would mean that I would have to attach a hot-shoe flash, which would add weight and expenses.
